Can diabetics eat onions
I have started reading this an article from diabetes co uk regarding "Onions could lower blood glucose and cholesterol levels" written by Kurt Wood and posted on the 11th of Mar 2015
Additionally the article mentioned that: "Onion bulb extract could reduce high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and cholesterol levels, according to new research. If the findings are developed further, it could form the basis of a new treatment for diabetes. .."
I've never seen anything saying that we cant. Life would become really difficult as onions are the basis for a lot of savoury dishes.
There is no reason at all why we can't eat onions! Lots of weird and wonderful things we shouldn't eat pop up all the time with absolutely no scientific facts to back them up.
A lesson in listening to your doctor, not the sensation media.
BTW my IBS prevents me eating a lot of onion and garlic. Allicin is the active substance and even the relatively mild leeks are on the red list. Chives aren't so bad as we only use them in small quantities.
On the subject of garlic - its onion family too, however, its easy to get garlic supplement from health stores with claims for heart health.
