gestational diabetes is generally just that - diabetes that appears whilst you are pregnant

as the article says it can be indicative that you will develop diabetes later so would be good to look at your life-style and minimise the risks that lead to type 2 diabetes - so look at diet and exercise.
However, there are also a couple of MODY forms of diabetes that can manifest as gestational diabetes. MODY is a dominant gene so if you have inherited the relevant gene from parents then you will develop that diabetes. MODY isn't type 1 or type 2. It is closer to type 1 but is frequently misdiagnosed as type 2. There are a number of genetic variations that have been identified but each is quite rare and, because it is closer to type 1 (problems in the pancreas causing a reduced production of insulin) than type 2 (a resistance to insulin as a response particularly to having high levels of sugar in the diet) many types of MODY respond to different drugs from type 1 - so one thing to ask yoursel is whether there is a history of diabetes in your family.
One form of MODY that manifests quite frequently in gestational diabetes is very low grade and can be controlled by diet - and people can go there whole life without it actually showing up as a problem.
My mother has a MODY variant (though not the one above) - a form that manifests in thirties to mid-forties - and she had gestational diabetes - not sure though if it was both pregnancies or if just one (and if so if it was my brother or me). My brother inherited the gene, but I didn't so he has diabetes and I don't.
