One of the things going on with PD is an inflammatory response in our brain by cells called microglia. They rally round to defeat an infection but then they are slow to respond to shut down instructions once the crisis is past. This can slow our recovery and even do additional damage.

I won't give medical advice but will offer the following from Dr. Ray Sahelian, MD at raysahelian.com/luteolin.html -

"Luteolin is a flavonoid, and more precisely one of the citrus bioflavonoids. Just like most flavonoids, it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. It is found in high amounts in parsley, thyme, peppermint, basil herb, celery and artichoke.

.....

I am not sure which is highest but it is not of great importance since both celery and parsly have many other compounds that have health benefits and focusing on just one substance does not do them justice as to their overall health benefits. One should have a wide variety of condiments and vegetables in their diet.

How it works

Luteolin exerts a variety of pharmacological activities and anti-oxidant properties associated with its capacity to scavenge oxygen and nitrogen species. It also shows potent anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) signaling in immune cells.

Luteolin and brain inflammation

University of Illinois researchers report lutelin, found in celery and green peppers, can disrupt a component of the inflammatory response in the brain. Rodney Johnson of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and graduate student Saebyeol Jang found that luteolin inhibits a key pathway in the inflammatory response of microglia -- brain cells key to the body's immune defense. Microglial cells exposed to luteolin show a significantly diminished inflammatory response. Luteolin reduces production of interleukin-6 -- used in cellular communication -- in the inflammatory pathway by as much as 90 percent."

This is very interesting. I had hernia surgery last year in summer, a torn anterior something in my hip in December, but the most debilitating was the bronchitis in March. I am now walking with a walker and need an assistant to get most places. Just don't seem to absorb the meds and elimination is a miracle. Drs baffled. I will look into this.

This is very interesting. My daughter has always insisted that my husband sickest time is the month after his flu shot.

Flu shots should be much more debated for PWP for this very reason. Many neuros seem unaware of the immune problem even though Carvey at Rush and Bin Liu at the NIH published the basic research ten years ago. They injected a mouse with bacterial toxin and watched the subject's immune response. In the periphery (i.e. outside the brain) as all the cells got excited and then calmed down over a few hours time. In the brain, however, of the same mouse, the excited state remained in full force ten *months* layer! Ever notice how many of us remember having the flu in the months before diagnosis?

I had a flu jab at the end of October. Around the beginning of december I began to feel quite I'll with flu symptoms and was bedridden for a few days. I have a terrible cough and still feel weak. Could my Parkinson's have caused this? I was diagnosed in July and this is my first flu vaccine.
