Serotonin and resting tremor

I couldn't find discussion of this by searching the forum, but thought it might be interesting. It talks about serotonin and resting tremor. From 2018 with limitations noted.

Thank you for posting! This was an interesting study for me since I am tremor dominant!

I have long thought this was the case since my tremors go away once asleep, or even if I nod off. But also since serotonin helps with bowel movements as well. Here is something I found trying to learn what supplements help with Serotonin.

healthline.com/health/how-t...

"What produces the most serotonin?

Approximately 95%Trusted Source of the serotonin in your body is produced in your gastrointestinal tract. The other 5% is produced by your central nervous system."

That's a good article. I've had some success with controlling light exposure (direct sunlight in AM, blue filtered light after sun goes down). I have no problem getting to sleep, or staying asleep, anymore. Thinking about adding in 5HTP.

IMO sunlight will re-emerge as a nutrient

Agreed. Sunlight is incredibly important, especially with correct timing. I've begun using a special light bulb at night that filters out the blue light spectrum, and my computer monitor has the same tech built in. The result is that I fall asleep very easily now.

5htp worked for a while to calm my nerves and eventually stopped helping. Could be my supplement list has crossed over into poly pharmacy territory.

Be careful with 5HTP. It's only one step away from serotonin, so serotonin syndrome would be easier to induce than with tryptophan. That being said, there's some evidence 5HTP might counter levodopa induced dyskinesia.

Mouse study; biomolther.org/journal/view.... " Our results showed that 5-HTP significantly suppressed all types of dyskinetic movements (axial, limb, orolingual and locomotive) and its effects were similar to those of amantadine, the only approved drug by Food and Drug Administration. Moreover, 5-HTP did not affect the efficacy of L-DOPA on PD motor manifestations."

Preliminary (very small) human study;  pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/324... "Repeated measures analysis revealed a significant improvement of LIDs during the 50 mg 5-HTP treatment as assessed by the UDysRS and UPDRS-IV scores."

Another preliminary study showed efficacy in PD depression; pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/320.... "Repeated-measures analysis revealed a significant improvement of depressive symptoms during the 50-mg 5-HTP treatment compared with placebo as assessed by the HDRS."

Since both human studies limited the dose to 50 mg, it might be wise not to take more than that. And anybody with a history of mania, and those on SSRIs (or who react poorly to them) should probably steer clear.
