Added 1/26/24: I had sleep issues and had to quit 299v. I can’t rule out placebo, but sleep could also be B1 break (I was on day 4 of the break. I quit 299v on day 22 of the B1.) Could the effects of B1 being cleared from my body be responsible for any improvements and/or any problems? I believe 299v deserves another test. Not sure when, but I will trial again.
I take a multitude of things supposedly good for inflammation — after 12 days of taking 2 a day of 299v:
- Inflammation: I have a Sebaceous Cyst that is in a location on my back that is easily irritated, it has been getting larger for the last year; it was looking like I was going to have it surgery removed it. It is now getting smaller and isn’t bothering me.
- I am not taking any Advil (anti-inflammatory) for my bad back or my bad neck. I haven’t even had to take Tylenol for pain.
- “A healthy immune system recognizes and fights off illness and disease. Inflammation is part of that process. However, if inflammation persists over long periods of time — which might be the case in Parkinson’s disease (PD) — it can begin to do more harm than good.” parkinson.org/blog/science-...
“L. plantarum 299v is a probiotic strain of lactic acid bacteria... which can modulate the immune system. Its immunomodulating properties are observed among others in decreasing the level of anti-inflammatory cytokines... The results obtained from various studies show incontestable positive influence of L. plantarum 299v on human microbiome and overall body functioning, even in patients with serious health problems*... The lack of side effects... increases the value of this strain... because it... its non-invasive character. ” ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
*For a NIH site to be that positive is very very rare.
One of articles I read said present in feces 10 days after termination. So even if the rest of your life, 1 a week might do the trick. For now I will continue 2 a day. I have 5 boxes.
I have cut back on my C/L with no ill effect* on my PD. My mood is excellent. What I have is a single strand of probiotic, it could also be over powering some harmful ones.
* I do have some off time about 30 minutes before my next dose is due, also I am not diabetic but I believe it is messing with my blood sugar (I sometimes get week when I am hungry).
Word of Caution; I did see one article on both 299 an 299v. They are not the same. Whether they do the same is questionable. 299v is a registered trademark of Probi, a Swedish company with offices in Sweden, USA and Asia.
People need to know that it's not only important to take anti inflammatories but to stop eating foods that cause inflammation. i.e. processed food including bread and other baked flour based foods and refined seed oils both of which cause oxidative stress.
I was taking one with a multitude of different strains, also had L. plantarum (no suffix). I am now just taking this with only 299v. Maybe the single strain over powers what's in your gut.
is there anyone that shouldn’t take this? Does it do anything for tremors? Does it help with constipation? How do you know how much to take? Thanks for your help.
I wouldn't think it would hurt anyone. Box says promotes regularity.

Thanks - wasn't there also something concerning about it, like it increases the transportation of iron into the brain, which is toxic for PD - trying to remember?
The increase iron absorption was a study of people taking iron supplements. In a normal diet iron should not be a problem.
I question if iron is the problem. Yes, iron is one of the metals found in autopsies of deceased PD patents brains, but it could be due dysfunctional iron utilization.
There must be way more that read HU than like or comment. I have run into sold out myself on promising posts. That's the reason, I ordered 4 more and now have 5 unopened boxes. That's 6 that I brought for under $12.
Placebo, My Mood is excellent. With PD the Placebo effect is high, because placebos stimulate the release of dopamine and dopamine is what PWP are lacking. 299v has been studied for 3 decades, which includes studies that produced mood enhancement in PWP. At only 2 weeks, it could be Placebo. I’m zeroing in on inflammation when mood enhancement might be the key. Thank you, Lord, for the relief I have had. I pray it continues.
I reduced my C/L because one day I accidently miss a dose and had no off* period. I am experiencing some off, so today I am increasing (was 2 three times a day, decreased to 1-1/2 three times a day, plan 2, 1-1/2, 1-1/2)
*off - return of some tremor beyond what I consider due to excitement.
My mum has been taking this for seven days. Jarrow's Ideal Bowel Support (LP 299v). Thanks for bringing it up, Gcf.
2 capsules per day. Taken together, mid-morning.
I've noted several changes that are very encouraging....and I'm a little reluctant to write about it because it's very surprising: I'm entirely open to the possibility that these improvements are just a coincidence....though a placebo effect is unlikely: my mum's dementia means she has no idea about the whats and whys of her medications and supplements.
- Mum very often has pain in the mornings. I've been managing it, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, for many months and it's been slowly getting worse. It's complex, chronic pain. Largely nociplastic (a pain system/ neurological issue) rather than an actual problem with her hip. She has had no pain for five mornings in a row. That hasn't happened for perhaps eight months.
- Her last two evenings have been the best for some months. Her sundowning (a dementia symptom) has been much better. She's more relaxed. Less agitated.
- We play ball every day, sitting three or so yds apart. She enjoys it. I keep a very close eye on her abilities. Over the last year, her throw has become very weak. These last days her thow has been much better and, at times, as good as it was twelve months ago.
I will whisper it: taken together this looks like a neurological improvement. Throwing is a skill. Skill is neurological.
However, please note that while her throw has improved, her broader movement capacity has not. Bradykinesia, gait, freezing, and tremor are unchanged. In short: her explicitly Parkinson's issues have not improved.
If I had read this article, I probably wouldn't have tried 299v. It suggests iron is a problem in PD, but also states, "So is iron elevation the cause of PD? Not really, since there has to be some other process that causes iron to elevate in the first place. The same could be said of any other factor implicated in PD. If alpha synuclein is the cause of Parkinson’s disease, what causes the protein to aggregate? Understanding the cause of PD may be difficult to define."parkinsonsinstitutesarasota...
I add: Iron is one of the metals found in autopsies of deceased PD patents brains, But, which was first alpha synuclein or iron. Did iron cause the clumps or was iron attracted to the clumps?
