I had xrays and an orthopedic surgeon exam.

He says I have osteoarthritis and need a FULL hip replacement.

1. Anybody else, here --- have that disagnosis?

2. What are you doing for the pain and limping?

3. Did you get a hip repplacement?

Thanks for the feedback!

Not a hip, but I was told I need total shoulder replacement.I won't be able to do it though. I am tremor dominant on the affected side and if I immobilize the arm, I get terrible and painful stiffness that is intolerable. I try to bear with the pain, but it affects my workouts, yoga, and ping pong (I play with Ping Pong Parkinson group 2x/ week). Oh well, it's the disease that just keeps giving.

Been DX 8 years. Just had a total hip replacement 7 weeks ago for severe osteoarthritis

All went very well although I was very apprehensive beforehand.

Can I answer any questions for you ,?

you are MOST KIND for your reply ... I'm really SUFFERING like no other time in my life... my PD is not dx'd ... officially ... although i am getting tens of thousands of INTERNAL tremors for 2 1/2 years ...

i'm seeing a 2nd neuro/MDS in February and I hope to get the PD skin test.

For about 10 years ... (I'm 71 years old now) very gradually my left hip has gone from "no big deal" to ... PAIN ALL THE TIME.

I got xrays 3 weeks ago and my M.D. said: "mild athritis" but referred me to an orthopedic doc. I saw him 2 weeks ago (HORRIBLE doc who was OVERWHELMED with patients and all I got was a lousy 15 minutes!) ...

In his first 30 seconds he says: "You need a total hip replacement."

!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

I've LOST 50 pounds on the O.M.A.D. diet (today is day #618 with all calories eaten within a 2 hour window) ... and i was doing a 14 mile bike trip ... a couple of times a week ... but the last time i OVER-DID it ... which may have triggered what I've been suffering from going on 3 months.

I'm very glad to hear everything went very well for you!

1. Can you walk without a cane?

2. Do you have a limp?

3. How long was the operation?

4. Totally sedated or local anesthesia?

5. What level of pain are you in now ... compared to before the operation?

6. How did you choose your doctor?

I'm sure I'll have more questions and again ... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ... for any advice you give me!

I can walk without a cane. Crutches needed for about 2 weeks post operation.

I do not have a limp now. I had a slight limp before surgery.

Not sure of operation duration but probably less than 2 hours.

Epidural with sedation NOT general anaesthetic. I felt this helped. I came out of theatre feeling ok.

Level of pain is minimal. I am 7 weeks post op and pain is diminishing daily. I can walk with no pain.

Just tender at operation site which should improve.

Doctor was by word of mouth and we also research on line.

THR is major surgery. In my experience i couldnt put up with the hip pain from osteoarthritis any longer. I was extremely reluctant to undertake surgery but in my case it has been worth it.

I forgot to mention.

I had the anterior approach. They go in from the front. Not the side or the back.

Hi, this might sound a bit silly to you but I think we may draw some parallels between animals and humans.

My Labrador dog developed arthritis in his knee when he was about 3. I had been feeding him special expensive dog dried dog food. He went to a special joint surgeon vet who said he needed surgery. Expensive!

So I put him on a raw meat and bone diet and made him bone broth from chicken carcasses and lamb bones and he has 1/2 cup per day. Within a month his limp started to go away and now he is 5 with no sign of any limp.

I don’t know what your diet is like but you could try eliminating any inflammatory foods like sugar, gluten, seed oils especially any deep fried foods (replace with olive oil). There are lots of articles on foods to avoid with arthritis.

Then make bone broth and take it every day . You can make it into soup or add it to stews etc. And of course eat lots of vegetables(not much potato) nuts, seeds, beans, lentils chickpeas.

I think it is worth a shot to see if you can get any improvement before having surgery.

I would also slow your rate of losing weight if you can to a steady burn as when fat is burned any toxins stored in the fat cells will be released at once so your body has to deal with a flood of toxins and it might make you feel sick and overtax your body.

Also with PD and the shaking it can be a struggle to keep weight on so a little extra at the start is ok.

Also don’t aggrevated it by doing too much exercise while it is sore.

I very much appreciate your thoughtful and detailed reply, THANK YOU!

And it's heart-warming to read about your devotion to your furry friend and it's wonderful that he/she has recovered! MARVELOUS!

----------------------------------------------------------------

1. As mentioned above, I'm on the O.M.A.D. diet ... and long ago (almost 2 years now) ... I've given up...

*sugar

*gluten

*dairy

*oils

*just about anything in a "package" as I eat 95% of the time, whole foods

--------------------------------

that said ...

I have been eating "meat, fish, poultry" for several months. And since this diagnosis of osteoarthritis ... when the last of my "chicken legs" are gone from my fridge ...

I'm switching to eggs and fish for protein only.

I've read how "meat" is (very controversial, I know) is inflammatory.

---------------------------------

As for my weight loss... the very FRUSTRATING thing is that I have not lost an ounce in over a year ... despite only eating ... one meal per day (still too many calories but I also tried "low calories" and I saw no weight loss after a certain point).

I'm 71 years old so I think my "slow metabolism" is the issue on the weight loss.

Now that i'm in pain almost 24/7 from my left hip (fortunately, no pain from PD, just tens of thousands of internal tremors ...but I have a second neuro/MDS appointment in February on that one ... ) ...

So the hip pain prevents me from exercising .... So I'm trying to figure out who to do next ...

(I just contacted a chiro and I'm waiting for his reply...)

We all have our problems here on this forum. My heart breaks when I read about how others are REALLY suffering .... (my stuff is very minor in comparison) ...

I don't want to get "political" ... (I did that in another post and the HATE replies really poured out! LOL) ...

So let's just say that our collective misery could have been AVOIDED ...

but we're not important enough.

My husband was very overweight but then shed weight so fast and can’t keep it on now.

Try the bone broth, that might help.

i’m in the same predicament as you and I don’t know what to do yet. I don’t have a lot of pain so I could postpone it a couple of months.. I’m very upset as you can imagine. I am doing physical therapy to build up the muscles around the joint.. I was told that you will have a quicker recovery this way since my muscles are not that strong to begin with. My doctor told me to walk every day for 45 minutes, but so far I have managed 25. He said that doing so will keep my muscle memory strong and I would have hopefully a quicker recovery. Have you tried walking? How far can you go before the pain gets too bad. Try to find out how as much as you can by looking at YouTube and hearing about other peoples experience with the operation.

thank you very much for your thoughtful and detailed reply. I'm very sorry to hear about your condition.

Well --- '3' advils taken at the same time ... has been a minor miracle! They take about '5' hours to kick in (yeah, F I V E ...!) but after that ... WOW! Lasts the rest of day ... AND ... I'm (pretty much) OK the NEXT day!

I just woke up and the PAIN and STIFFNESS is .... back. (and I always have a severe limp with or without the advil).

I can't stand without pain -- let alone ... walk. And the last two times I tried a stationary bike (when I was feeling 'good' from taking the advil the day before) ... Within 30 minutes I had SEVERE LEFT HIP PAIN that lasted for DAYS (I restrict my advils).

I just came across an amazing video on YouTube yesterday:
