The Correct Curcumin for Used in "The Effect of Curcumin on Idiopathic Parkinson Disease: A Clinical and Skin Biopsy Study"

So I posted about this remarkable preliminary study that seems to show 1 gram of curcumin twice a day for a year actually improves motor and non-motor symptoms AND reduces the A-Syn detected in the skin. That seems pretty amazing (but it was a small study): The Effect of Curcumin on Idiopathic Parkinson Disease: A Clinical and Skin Biopsy Study healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

According to the original paper the version of curcumin that crosses the BBB is the Meriva which is made with phospholipids.

According to this paper, Most curcumin can't cross the BBB: Neuroprotection by curcumin: A review on brain delivery strategies sci-hub.ru/10.1016/j.ijphar...

From what I can find, you need the Meriva version to get the curcumin to the brain.

I found 2 Meriva products:

Thorne Curcumin Phytosome 1000 mg (Meriva) $51 for 120 500 mg capsules amazon.com/Thorne-Research-...

Now for some good news! I found some cheap Doctor's Best Curcumin Phytosome with Meriva: $35 for 180 500 mg capsules. Take four a day, that is 2 grams a day, 45 day supply for $35. $24 a month! amazon.com/dp/B008YDH4HM?ps...

I’m a little wary of the silicon dioxide added

I assumed it was just in the cheaper one. Nope

It’s in both

What I am reading indicates silicon dioxide is only harmful if you breath in the dust.

According to this page, SLCP Curcumin CAN cross the BBB: protocolforlife.com/cogumin...

Thanks. I learned something!

Pro Health use Longvida product, which has been in clinical trials, that did cross the blood brain barrier. My mother has been taking this supplement since 2015; which is a long time and although I cannot directly attribute any benefits to the Pro Health Curcumin, it has the proven Curcumin ingredient. Best wishes.

I just noticed that Meriva is made in Italy and all the researchers in this study are Italian. This may be why they chose Meriva! There may be other types of Curcumin that cross the BBB just as well. This is a link to the original paper: academic.oup.com/jnen/artic...

Thanks for sharing. I looked at it. It is a proprietary blend so I don't think there is any research to indicate it would help with PD. Not sure it would reach the brain either. Also not sure how much curcumin is in the 1 ML dose.

I have a high school degree so I am not an expert on these things. I like to stick to things I can use that have been used in studies.

That said, I am happy with the Meriva I bought.

Simon wrote about Curcumin last year. He was not as excited as I was. He also seems to think I am misreading the results: scienceofparkinsons.com/202...

More to come. I am still sold on Meriva.

I've got curcumin plus black pepper. I assume the pepper aids absorption into the blood. But does it cross the BBB?

Bolt_Upright profile image
Bolt_Upright in reply to kaypeeoh

I spent over an hour trying to figure out whether curcumin with piperine crosses the BBB. If you Google "curcumin blood brain barrier" you get plenty of results saying curcumin is a lipid so it crosses the BBB. But then you find things saying curcumin is not very bio-available (piperine makes it much more bio-available!) and they are working on ways to make it cross the BBB better.

So... I really don't know. They used Meriva in the trial, but that may be because the researchers were Italian and Meriva is Italian made.

Here is a good article. Makes me think Longvida is the best (maybe): Healing with Enhanced-Bioavailable Curcumin emersonecologics.com/blog/p...

This article shows BCM-95 crosses the (mouse) BBB: Neuroprotective Effect of Turmeric Extract in Combination with Its Essential Oil and Enhanced Brain Bioavailability in an Animal Model hindawi.com/journals/bmri/2...

It is confusing. I will probably stick with Mireva but mix in my BCM-95 stock also until I run out.

Found a product that has Mervia and PEA going to try that for pain for HWP. It is expensive but I can do one of these pills and on one of the less expensive version of curcumin that cross BBB. PEA + with 500mg Merva and 300 mg of PEA by Enzyme Science. Auto delivery is cheaper; will try it for two months.

Bolt_Upright profile image
Bolt_Upright in reply to Sydney75

I'd feel better if that PEA was Ultra-Micronized or at least Micronized.

I use this PEA. Half a Teaspoon is 600 mg. 100 grams for $50 means 166 days dosages for $50. That is about $10 a month. I put this in applesauce: amazon.com/gp/product/B07NJ...

Then Doctor's Best Curcumin Phytosome with Meriva: $35 for 180 500 mg capsules. Take four a day, that is 2 grams a day, 45 day supply for $35. $24 a month!

More surprisingly were the changes in the UPDRS scores. The UPDRS is a scale used to assess symptoms of PD. There were significant improvements in Behavior, Mentation, and Mood scores in 12 weeks. Additionally, improvements in scores on the Depression and Anxiety scales were also seen in 12 weeks, even in the midst of COVID isolation. This was surprising.
