Best Form of Magnesium Supplement

Interested in folks opinions on this. Looking to start taking Mg Supplement but confused about the relative positive/negatives for each type. L-threonate being talked up as it crosses the BBB and has slowed neural decline in mice - but quite pricey compared to say Malate or Glycimate.

Aged 50, diagnosed 18 months ago. Still (fortunately) very active. Toes cramp sometimes on runs - hoping Mg can help with this.

Also aiming to use as a 'platform' for finding 'sweet spot' dose of B1 therapy.

Any feedback appreciated!

I’ve noticed a marked improvement in leg cramps using magnesium glycinate.

At what dosage? How bad are your cramps? Toe cramps that make walking difficult? Did you try other MG types?

I take 300mg usually before bed. It’s a powder form. I’ve tried several types but this one seems to help me. My cramps would get pretty bad. Very painful. So far since I’ve been using this MG it’s been going ok.

Which brand or brands have you used and seem to work the best?

My husband has noticed a marked decline in restless legs using clean magnesium from British Supplements ( based in U.K) worth reading the reviews.( No,I dont have shares in the company!)

Try Mercola's L-threonate. We've been taking it for years. You can read about it on his website. My husband also takes magnesium oxide to help with constipation. And Pure's magnesium glycinate which was recommended on HU.

Magnesium Glycinate is one of the more bioavailable forms of magnesium and may help with the toe cramping, but if it doesn't, as sometimes happens, try topical magnesium chloride oil applied to the foot before your run. This should eliminate toe cramping on your runs.

When you are talking about magnesium l threonate, this is not likely to be effective for toe cramping as it is targeted to the brain as is magnesium taurate and magnesium aspartate.

The topical mag oil will be the best and fastest acting for toe cramping and muscle cramping while running. Here is a link to a typical product that you just spray on your feet and rub in a bit :

Mag oil is useful for more than cramping and you might read some of the reviews to get a better idea of what people use mag oil for.

I wrote this 5 years ago, but you may find it helpful regarding magnesium :

Appreciate you taking the time to share that Art - very comprehensive guide to Mg. Think you’ve sealed the deal for Glycinate, certainly for now!
