Update 6/29/22: Berberine may be neurotoxic. It is off of my stack: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

So I stumbled across this article while searching on Honokiol: Alpha-synuclein-induced mitochondrial dysfunction is mediated via a sirtuin 3-dependent pathway 2020 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/a...
But when I read it, it did not use Honokiol. It used AICAR. So I searched on AICAR: (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-β-D-ribofuranoside) is a substance produced naturally by the body that stimulates AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK), a protein that regulates metabolism in a variety of ways. AMPK acts as an energy regulator and is activated during exercise or other circumstances that use up cellular energy. usada.org/spirit-of-sport/e...
So AICAR is a pharmacological AND not approved for anything anywhere in the world (but you might be able to find some behind your local gym).
Which led me to something good! Targeting AMPK Signaling as a Neuroprotective Strategy in Parkinson’s Disease 2018 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/a...
"A number of exogenous small-molecule agents have been identified that can modulate the activity of AMPK, and many of these are already available for use in humans. Examples include anti-hyperglycemic medications such as metformin and pioglitazone, the dietary supplement β-guanidinopropionic acid (GPA), and a huge number of naturally derived phytochemicals, such as resveratrol, quercetin, and berberine"
"A number of pharmacological agents have also been developed that can activate AMPK directly [24]. The first of these was AICAR, which, when metabolized to the nucleotide ZMP, binds to and activates AMPK by mimicking the functions of AMP "
"Activating AMPK has a variety of effects that may be relevant to PD. This includes changes in cellular metabolism, promotion of autophagy, enhanced mitochondrial quality control, increased antioxidant capacity, and reduced inflammation (Fig. 1). Each of these functions and their relevance to PD are discussed below."
So... I was sad I could not find AICAR, but I was already taking Berberine and it may be something good.
