Which one is better? Have tried them all for my HWP with no discernable benefit, would like to try one of them again.....but which one......any tips or suggestions?
Mannitol, Trehalose or Xylitol? - Cure Parkinson's
Mannitol, Trehalose or Xylitol?
I think the simplest way to answer your question is send you to a blog entry: silverliningsandparkinsons....
You can not purchase Trehalose to ingest as far as I know? If someone knows otherwise that would be great.
I bought it here in the UK (after reading what sunvox had to say about it in the Ataxia forum here on HU), Glen has been taking it but very irregularly for the past couple of months........just about to run out and wondering whether I should rather purchase mannitol again.
Btw, I purchased from trehalose.co.uk
Thank you! I will look in to acquiring itHave you heard about farnesol?
No I haven't. What is it?
Hi Gerry!
As far as I know, mannitol is the only one that has any semblance of testing in PwP and that is mainly anecdotal.
Trehalose is available at suppliers such as this :

google.com/search?q=trehalo...

Thank you Art. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Mannitol could be contra-indicated in some PWP with a certain type of gut bacteria.......does that 'ring any bells'?
That is what I read about Trehalose acting to create a type of super C-diff, if I remember correctly, but I missed that about Mannitol.
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
There are other studies showing that Trehalose does not cause this problem so it is a bit confusing :
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/331...
Mannitol is known for increasing butyrate in the gut if there are enough butyrate producing bacteria in the gut, but this is not the reason that Mannitol was first thought to be useful in PD. Butyrate also helps repair the gut mucosal barrier and endothelial cells helping to reduce gut permeability/leaky gut which is an inflammatory process that we don't need so mannitol is useful in that way.

Thanks Art, that is very helpful but, as you say........confusing!
Trehalose is a supplement that Joe/Sunvox used as part of his protocol as described in his profile.

Yes, that was what originally prompted me to buy it for Glen to try. Sadly, he hasn't taken it regularly enough for me to ascertain any discernable benefit.
It would seem that the trehalose is very useful. Here a recent Italian research on LRRK2 and the G2019S mutation responsible for 10% of PD cases and the use of trehalose.

Thank you Gio......amazing that you found this!I've just ordered 1kg of mannitol but I'm still unsure which is better ie trehalose or mannitol. Maybe I will 'hedge my bets' and alternate between the two!

Neuroprotective Effects of Trehalose and Sodium Butyrate on Preformed Fibrillar Form of α-Synuclein-Induced Rat Model of Parkinson’s Disease - 2021 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
I did find this article "Natural Compounds and Autophagy: Allies Against Neurodegeneration" frontiersin.org/articles/10... from 2020 that says you can't take Trehalose orally, but that confuses me because sunvox linked to ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl... seems to indicate taking 100 grams a day does make it into your blood.
There is also this article from 2017 Autophagy induction by trehalose: Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic impacts researchgate.net/publicatio... if you scroll down past the abstract it shows a bunch of citations with cool factoids.
I am about to order Trehalose... swansonvitamins.com/swanson...
