TITLE: Role of Diet and Nutritional Supplements in Parkinson’s Disease Progression
JOURNAL: Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity
ABSTRACT:
Objectives. The goal of this study is to describe modifiable lifestyle variables associated with reduced rate of Parkinson’s disease (PD) progression.
Methods. The patient-reported outcomes in PD (PRO-PD) were used as the primary outcome measure, and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess dietary intake. In this cross-sectional analysis, regression analysis was performed on baseline data to identify the nutritional and pharmacological interventions associated with the rate of PD progression. All analyses were adjusted for age, gender, and years since diagnosis.
Results. 1053 individuals with self-reported idiopathic PD were available for analysis. Foods associated with the reduced rate of PD progression included fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, nuts and seeds, nonfried fish, olive oil, wine, coconut oil, fresh herbs, and spices (P<0.05). Foods associated with more rapid PD progression include canned fruits and vegetables, diet and nondiet soda, fried foods, beef, ice cream, yogurt, and cheese (P<0.05). Nutritional supplements coenzyme Q10 and fish oil were associated with reduced PD progression (P=0.026 and , P=0.019 resp.), and iron supplementation was associated with faster progression (P=0.022).
Discussion. These are the first data to provide evidence that targeted nutrition is associated with the rate of PD progression.
Conflicting information. We eat a little bit of everything but organic, grass fed beef, chicken, lamb, kefir, full fat yogurt and aged cheese. Mediterranean diet all my life, plenty of sunbathing in the summer, seasonal fruits and veggies, fried fish and fried potatoes in olive oil (that's all we use where I come from), Greek salads with tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, onions and feta cheese, (salad with olive oil and vinegar for dressing), legumes, and walking everywhere--recipe for health.
It was a post from NRyan 5 month about appointment with her. I hope it will help you.
Just got off the Skype call with Dr. Mischley in Seattle. I have high Arachidonic acid level and low DHEA, Vit D and Uric acid levels in my blood. Recipe for PD disaster....I believe I may be a poster child. No meat, eggs or dairy ever again, period. Fish ok. Fasting 12 hours or more, including 3 hours prior to sleep. Fantastic conversation. The best doctor visit I have ever had with any physician. $250 lab work and $250 doctor visit (60 minutes). I told her it was a steal! I have another appointment in 3 months (my own initiative) that I can't wait for. She is knowledgeable, direct and an optimistic realist, with actual results to guide her. Wealth of info on PD. As her patient, she is having my earwax sniffed by her PD detecting dogs. Never thought I'd be writing those words. lol! She is sending me an email with all her recommendations. I will share when I receive it. My heart is happy!
Appreciate it so much! I hope she will be able to help all her patients in halting the progression, just as I hope the same for my husband although he is doing great thanks to HDT therapy, vitamins, and MP. I only hope she can help us with the right dose of MP although we think we have found it.
I have another visit with her this month. She is so great to talk to and she is a wealth of info. Basically vegan (plus some seafood) and added supplements with exercise. I plan to skype with her twice a year to monitor my progress and get her input on what else I can be doing.
Thanks NRyan. My husband has seen Cleveland Clinic Functional Medicine doctors who did a lot of testing, too, but they recommended keto diet, intermittent fasting, vitamins, exercise, etc. I don't believe he and I will become vegan. As far as exercise is concerned, we have been exercising all of our lives. In addition, we have been eating Mediterranean diet also all of our lives. Whole foods and nothing else. I basically would like her to guide us in taking the right amount of vitamins and nootropics but especially to guide us on MP dose. Are you on regular meds, how does she feel about it?
My husband was exposed for a year to Agent Orange. . .
I do not take meds at this time. I am not suggesting anyone become vegan, I am simply reporting what Dr. Mischley recommended for me. I do know she has evidence that supports PwP avoid dairy in any form from all animals. My dad had PD, now me. Every person has their own path.
This video is interesting in so many ways....but it helps to put this disease for each of us into perspective. There is talk of addiction, that is interesting but its all the other stuff that really relates to our disease process.
I tried to get it to reload with no success. Look up Gabor Mate on Youtube. The title "who we are when we are not addicted" It is a very interesting watch.
