Balance: Have a big problem with balance do... - Cure Parkinson's
Balance
Two of the major symptoms I was experiiencing early on with Parkinson's were imbalance and drooling. Foot dragging was also a problem. Fortunately I began taking Vitamin D because I thought it might prevent the flu. Within hours of taking Vitamin D, drooling ceased, my balance was restored and foot dragging stopped. That was about four or five years ago. Those symptoms never returned. I know it sounds incredible. Vitamin D defiency is commonplace with PWP. I take 10,000
I.u. daily
Hi Blackfeather. What kind of D vit do you take? (D2-D3?). And what brand? Tks
Did you get your levels checked … before and after? My V-d was low, I started taking 2000 iu a day for a year and got it up to a good level but it did not help me symptom wise. My dr did not support taking more than 3000 iu a day as there have been adverse reactions in some people with higher doses.
If you're not using a walker, you should be. The U-STEP model is the best--not cheap, but well worth it!
The exercises that help me the most - keep me from falling - are balancing on one foot. i started out holding on to the kitchen counter to be safe but became strong enough eventually to do it w.o assistance. it took a while...at least 3 months. i graduated to walking a straight line forward and backwards. my balance is still off because of PD but i am much better and am strong enough to self correct - keep from falling. squats are good too. do them from a chair .. seated to be safe. i do not use a walker or assist.
Googled ankle injury and Parkinsons. Any type of ankle injury as an infant or older gives these symptoms. Also DNA testing showed my body struggling to upregulate L dopa
Thanks guys have taken them all onboard
Thank you blackfeather I will try vitD I just want to stop falling over again,
Hi Smyrhy, unfortunately I’m right there with you. I’m 47 and was diagnosed just over two years. Balance and gate have been my worst issues so far. However, balance has been the hardest challenge for me. Medication (C/L) seems to help with gate, little has helped improve my balance. I literally walk around like I’ve been drinking most of the time. I have tried numerous things in attempt to change this with little to no success. I do boxing three times a week, exercise two or three more days per week, I’m on an all natural diet with zero sugar, I take numerous supplements and (after reading this string a few weeks ago) I have increased the vitamin D3 to 6000 iu/ day. I don’t think any of that has really helped my balance. I’m stronger and leaner than I have been since college but that doesn’t seem to matter. I feel as if my body’s center of gravity has shifted to somewhere out in front of me making me tend to lean (or fall) forward as I walk or move.
Obviously I don’t have a solution to offer you yet, therefore, I’m posting here to encourage anyone with experiences or ideas on mending our balance dilemma please post more or message directly.
Thank you!
Balance , It is my first indicator that I needed to take a dose of CD/LD 15 minutes ago. I am thank full that I installed hand holds securely fastened to the walls in strategic locations and installed a stair glide lift. Inside the house I am not so bad unless someone has moved a piece of furniture that I automatically reach out for. I would not go outside without my wheeled walker.
I use 6 K units of Vit. D3 in Spring and Fall , 4 K in the summer and 10 to12 K in the winter and 18K when Covid virus appears. We saw the sun yesterday for a couple hours , a very nice blue sky but it was just to cold to go out in it and now I realize that I am still on Summer dose. Thanks for this post.
The problem can be more than falling ( as if that was not enough.) My brain (which has turned against me ) can not receive information feed back from soles of my feet etc, so it has a different centre of gravity than actual so it demands that my back muscles contort to conform and creates much muscle cramping pain. Stupid brain.
You might want to read posts written by Health Unlocked member"Juliegrace " who relies on protection that will help her when she does fall. I imagine a roller skating queen with elbow and knee pads.
