Common name Comtan. This is a COMT inhibitor drug. Dose anyone have an opinion or experience on this drug. I have just been given a scrip for it. I plan on starting it with my C/L next week.

I was started on entacapone with 1 tab dopa. It can cause tummy upsets also don't get scared but the urine becomes a high coloured orange. The only thing you should be careful of especially is the early onset of dyskinesia due to which I had to stop it.

I have been using it three times a day with my L/D since May. It had been helping me maintain between doses. Lately I am having off-times about one-half hour before my next dose. I was DX 5/13.

For my husband it was a total nightmare, and so embarrassing as we did not know the effect on the bowel.

It gave him projectile diarrhoea, the first time at a function, it was so difficult to deal with, the minute he stopped taking it the problem disappeared, he was put back on it with a much smaller dosage a couple of years later and again instant diarrhoea, never again.

And Hal if you are reading this no black humour, we've been there done that.

My husband has been taking it for over 3 years. Almost immediately after starting it his tremor stopped. I am not ready to crediting the Comtan but in any case it did extend the life of the sinemet. He had no problem with side effects. It is always difficult to do your own trial with medication because there are so many varying factors. Certainly noting a loss of tremor makes it easier to note effects whether they apply or not. We are all doing our own trial with medication. Good luck.

I've been taking 100 mg Comtan (200mg tab, split in half) and with C/L every three hours five times a day for years now. It has extended the C/L's effectiveness pretty well for me, but I need to remain very consistent about when and how I take my meds and keep exercising for them to stay effective. Do not recall any troubling side effects but it was very expensive before my insurance covered it.
