Excess mucus

Any ideas of easing excess mucus which my husband suffers from,seems worse since change of meds, taken off one and put on another (anti depressant )

Hi Macelott. Do you mean excess mucus or saliva? If it is saliva, then he must learn to consciously swallow more often. Part of the problem is not swallowing, unless eating something. We produce saliva all the time, and healthy people swallow it, without thinking, but we don't.

If you mean mucus, then is it in the chest? I found that I was continually getting mucus in the chest, but that had nothing to do with Pd, it had everything to do with 'Dairy Products'. When I stopped dairy, the mucus stopped. The only reason I am telling you is that with Pd, we have to be careful with chest infections, because they quickly turn into pneumonia, if we don't catch the infection in time. Normally our bodies bring mucus up out of the chest with a process in which the small muscles around the wind pipe contract and expand in a ripple motion, bringing the mucus up to the throat. That process stops working , when we have Pd.

Is it mucous in the colon? I am bothered by this too. Sometimes I take a Mucinex.

Hi,! no it's more in his throat. He dribbles quite badly at times. It's been worse since they changed his anti depressant.

What anti depressant is he on? And is he on an MAO inhibitor - azilect?

The reason why I asked about antidepressants is because the generic antidepressant Bupropion (Wellbutrin) has been shown to relieve depressive symptoms in Parkinson's disease and to improve motor function. The only 'catch' is it cannot be used with an MAO-inhibitor. MAOi were originally used to treat tuberculosis and were shown to improve moods of Tb patients. The term antidepressant was first used in 1952.
