Parkinson's and asthma mucus?

Grammy80 profile image

I've had asthma for over 35 years, well controlled with Breo in the am, and had discarded my share of expired rescue inhalers. Before my PD diagnosis (when I look back), I was coughing up chunks, sorry-gross😝, of mucus. That was something new for me. As this continued, I wondered if someone out there knew if this could be related to the PD.

I'm to be scheduled for a 'swallow study' this week since I do have some issues. Any knowledge shared is much appreciated~!!! 💞

N-acetyl cysteine, abbreviated as NAC, is a mucolytic, meaning it thins mucus, and there's some evidence it is beneficial for Parkinson's. It is available as a supplement.

I personally recovered from severe asthma exacerbations once with a course of antibiotics, and on another occasion with a course of antifungal medication. I have not had asthma symptoms for many years. The moral of the story is asthma can result from bacterial or fungal lung colonization.

I have no clue why my asthma turned up in my 50s~! I'd taken my mother to the hospital and we wound up sharing a room because of my low oxygen level! After inconsistent success with other inhalers, Breo has worked 100%, I have not had a serious exacerbation though I'd noticed some shallow breathing occassionally. But I'd never coughed up phlegm or mucus like that; a deliberate ball that wanted up and out. I wondered if it was in any way realted to what feels like a constriction in my throat.

With all the supplements I hear discussed, this Amazon Queen is going to have to buy another wall cabinet; I'm housing a pharmacy now~💞

I was lucky enough to have support from people on this amazing site. NAC was recommended I find that I can go without for three days if I have to and then I am coughing up solid phlegm.

Do you use an inhaler on a regular basis, M-o-ggy? Do you rely on the NAC to treat your asthma? This phlegm is totally new since PD. Thanks for the response💞

Hi there. I don't have asthma I use the NAC to treat phlegm which is thick solid. I understand that it can be part of the PD experience

There is so much I don't know!!! All these little changes in the way my system functioned that I was chalking up to the fact that my daily dose of prednisone was so high were the Parkinson's screaming to be diagnosed. Thanks so much...all this is leading me into more of a comfort zone in the sense that nothing unnerves me more than the unknown. I may not like the news I get, but I'm better at dealing with something I know about.💞

i don’t have asthma but recently I been tortured by thick mucus stuck in my throat which I have been unable to dislodge. With the help of this group I have made some progress. I was taking NAC but apparently not enough. So I increased my dosage and I also bought over the counter Mucinex. With these two my mucus has thinned enough to clear most of it. I also have my bed elevated. It helps drain my sinuses. Not perfect but bearable. Good luck with

continuing with my previous reply , Ambroxol has been recommended. There are some indications that Ambroxol might be beneficial for PD patients and it a cough suppressant , expectorant and might aide the thinning of mucus.

I couldn’t find it in USA but I have a daughter in The UK where’s available even though Amazon U k
