I started to have a problem with not able to cough up mucus so I asked at the health food store and they suggested Fenugreek & Thyme by Natures Sunshine. I took one tablet and it seemed to help. Its for upper respiratory discomfort . It can be taken with a meal 3x a day. It also might be seasonal because I seem to have had the same problem in the spring. Hope it helps.

Hi, for what it's worth. You can try Voice exercises let's say 5 minutes twice a day read anything for as loud as you can. Also if it is bacterial build up you can try hydrogen peroxide. Are you able to gargle? And are you able to spit out? You can do it as often as you need to during the day. I hope that's going to help a little bit. Mary

Agree with trying Thiamin and other suggestions. My hubby had lots of throat clearing and congestion, worse in the morning.

Greatly improved when he started Claritin Reditab 12 hour once daily in am. Turned out allergies were contributing to this! He didn’t need the 24 hour dose and it made a big difference for him.

Secretions can be a big problem in PD, and if severe, it can increase risk of aspiration pneumonia.

Botox injections can be made into parotid glands in severe cases.

But first, increasing carbidopa/levodopa can improve muscle strength needed to swallow.

Good to discuss with your Dr!

Good luck with Thiamin and finding a solution...it may be a combination of adjustments, too.

Sounds frightening. Are you avoiding dairy products? Might help reduce the amount of mucus. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I just about forgot, you can try the plain guaifenesin , called Mucinex. Just make sure that Mucinex is not mixed with some other drug. Mucinex is benign even if you take a large dosage, you can also use it way past the expiration date, it stays good.

It is clear that you are convinced about the muscle's current inability to function as required. Your doctor would know if there is anything to treat the muscle by strengthening it or surgery. In th meantime I will medicate to prevent or minimize the formation of mucus. But in the long term you will have to address the muscle's capability to you can get a device that sucks the mucus out

For one, you might try eating some horse raddish. You can start with some mild as it can be a bit bitter .

Just a tiny bit. It is a hot food and somewhat irritating. The irritation triggers the body to secrete more fluid to the area to thin the mucus. This is referred to as a mucolytic action

Various forms of cayenne cause a similar effect

Other contributors might be an underlying infection, allergy or irritation.

If you're a little dehydrated, this will make the mucus thicker and harder to expel.

Smokers are more congested because the tiny cilia structures in their airways are impaired by the smoking.

Ciliary function comes back a day or so after smoking is stopped.

Good morning jimo, I understand your concern. It is very important to be able to move the mucus/phlegm. Sucking on hard candy or cough drops aren't enough. Mucinex can thin the mucus and allow movement and thus give some relief. However, any complication with an airway needs to be addressed with some urgency. You may want to seek help from a doctor. Perhaps secure an appointment with your primary physician and request a referral to see a pulmonologist. Keeping your neurologist in the loop of course.

drink lots of water as it thins mucus. try not having milk products cheese as you maybe a person that milk increases mucus. these are things that help reduce mucus.

with PD it is difficult to hang top of body off bed with head near floor to allow mucus to flow up to mouth but some can do this.

if these don't help ask your doctor if there a home suction device?
