Lot of mucus

Hi, I'm 5 years from PD diagnoses. I'm now 61. I take 4x100mg levodopa daily.

Recently I have noticed lot of mucus in my throat/lungs. This is disturbing especially during nighttime. I also tested PEF and it shows only 430, optimum value for my size and age is 570. I also feel my respiratory is weak especially during off-time.

Are these typical PD symptoms?

Anyone else having the same and how have you treated a case?

Should I increase my daily levodopa dosage, Currently I take levodopa only daytime, not night. I feel off symptoms like rigidity/tremors after 2,5h after levodopa take?

"Excessive mucus in the lungs in Parkinson's disease is primarily caused by weakened swallowing muscles due to the neurological condition, leading to difficulty clearing saliva and mucus from the throat, often resulting in a buildup of phlegm; this can further contribute to aspiration and potential lung infections like pneumonia due to a weakened cough reflex; treatments include speech therapy to improve swallowing mechanics, hydration to thin mucus, breathing exercises, and in some cases, medications to manage saliva production.

Key points about excessive mucus in Parkinson's:

Cause:

The main culprit is dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) caused by muscle weakness in the throat and mouth due to Parkinson's disease, which impairs the ability to effectively clear saliva and mucus.

Symptoms:

People with Parkinson's may experience a feeling of phlegm in the throat, a dry cough, difficulty clearing airways, and increased risk of aspiration pneumonia.

Treatment options:

Speech therapy: A speech therapist can teach swallowing techniques and exercises to improve swallowing function and reduce mucus buildup.

Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids helps thin mucus and make it easier to clear.

Postural adjustments: Maintaining good posture during eating can aid swallowing.

Breathing exercises: Specific breathing techniques can help clear airways and improve lung capacity.

Medication management: In some cases, medications that manage saliva production may be prescribed.

Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST): This therapy can help strengthen the cough reflex to clear mucus more effectively. "

My HWP has the same issue. The Speech Therapist suggested that training your expiratory muscles also helps improve swallowing. We bought a small device for this on Amazon called “ the Breather”. We also use a natural seaweed product, ( at her suggestion) in case some of the throat mucous is from stomach acid or vapors the travel up to the throat. One teaspoon at night forms a barrier to stop stomach acid and gasses from moving up into throat. It is called Refux Gourmet.. Get the Vanilla Carmel. Both items available on Amazon. Speech therapy is ongoing. The Neurologist also suggested taking Mucinex to thin the mucous. Will look into the NAC also. Will post some positive results if we see any. We just started all this.

I thought maybe the Breather was a spirometer but apparently it is not and it is purported to help with breathing, swallowing, speech and may provide benefits in other areas as well. It is called a respiratory muscle training device

Consider NAC - N-acetyl cysteine. It is a mucolytic, meaning mucus thinner, and has been shown to be helpful in Parkinson's. Additional detail here: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

To extend your on-time consider an ER formulation of C/L. See here for further detail: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...
