Hi Everyone, I’m new here so feeling a little overwhelmed by my recent diagnosis. Here is my story. Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2012 which was successfully treated with Azathoprine. However, recently my blood platelets started dropping and I was given a liver ultrasound where I was told it felt stiff with scarring but then following a liver biopsy my results were ‘liver cirrhosis’ !! I’m now awaiting to speak to a liver specialist in Birmingham and hope they can find medication to treat my UC but without causing further harm to my liver. Has anyone else experienced liver cirrhosis caused by azaphoprine? Xx

Azathoprine caused Liver Cirrhosis!!!
How long were you taking the Azathioprine? I was on it for 2 years to treat my Vasculitis and don't seem to have a problem.
hi,, I was on azaphoprine for almost 10 years, I had 3 monthly blood tests yet they never got highlighted!!!! What’s the bloody point and I presumed all ok as I feel fine and they managed my UC. Now I’m waiting to be prescribed something else, which will help my UC but not affect my liver. Im on steroids at the no (only have 5 left and my consultant on holiday again). They don’t seem to care and his secretary makes me feel like I’m annoying
Hopefully you will be fine and only on it for a short time.
While I was on Azathioprine at one point, it didn't work well with my gut. I ended up at the max dose of Methotrexate of 25 mgs injection (other autoimmune issues as well as GI). My bloodwork was trending up on my liver enzymes so we reduced my dose back to 20 mgs. I highly suggest you ask your Dr to look into LDN (Low-dose naltrexone). I just started this about a month ago and it has pushed most of my autoimmune symptoms back and without the methotrexate. I encourage all on this site to research this. I have it made at a custom pharmacy. Sharing random link for you to read. Could be a good solution!
