what is worrying you? the change in surface or "coming out" as a runner?

My concern is that the change of surface may be so different that I am unable to do a full 5kms...I have signed up for a 5 km fun run which is happening in 12 weeks. My goal is to be able to run the full 5 kms and finish under 30 mins.

Don't be afraid... it's greater to be outside, I was running and training inside for many years. I am now starting from scratch but decided to do it outside, I feel much better and it's not that difficult. You will stronger ;)

Good luck and keep up !

It's neither harder nor easier to run outside after treadmill running, just different. I use a treadmill (I'm 61 and anxious to avoid too much stress on muscles and joints and a treadmill absorbs impact) but I run in the park after rain when the ground is soft. I find it hard to judge pace outside but it's not as boring as a treadmill and easier to distract the mind if you feel things are getting tough. Give it a go and happy running :)

When I moved from the treadmill to outdoors, I found it physically harder - just contending with kerbs and hills and different surfaces to run on can be quite challenging to start with. Having said that, the fact it is more challenging also means that trying to complete the longer runs is far less mind numbing than it is on the treadmill. I like to enjoy my surroundings when I'm outdoors running. Once you've graduated, I also think that when you are struggling, it's easier to set yourself landmarks to aim for (I'll let myself walk when I get to the fifth lamp-post) than it is to set a time (I'll walk after one more minute), which turns it into a count-down. I often find that when I get to the fifth lamp-post I feel more comfortable and can carry on a bit longer. Good luck :-)

Thanks heaps, I was concerned that I would not be able to go as fast as I can on the treadmill and that I may not be able to finish the full 5kms.
