Why do my knees hurt when I go up stairs and not when I run?
I would like to that too, been in agony walking upstairs all day today
I think when you go upstairs you are stretching all the muscles, tendons, ligaments etc, more than when you walk. (wonder how many of you are now lifting your knee to see), so you hopefully arent injured things are just getting stretched a bit, well thats the logic from someone that doesnt know for certain anyway. If i were you it wouldnt hurt just to ice your knees, i bought an ice pack from Boots, really reasonable and have used it loads since i started this and it always seems to ease aches and pains.
There are approximately 2000 steps in a mile running. That's a lot of pounding, even if you are running very slowly. Ice your knees after a run, take it easy on the increments (no more than 10% a week), and take your rest days.
Cycling helped my knees when I went through this at the beginning of the programme. I just did 5-10k on the exercise bike on my rest days from running.
