If you are running a set distance then it is useful to know how long it has taken to get to specific places in that run. So you might be running a 3.1 miles route (roughly a 5k) and want to know your 'split time' at 1 mile, 2 miles and 3 miles, In a half marathon you might have a split time when you get halfway.

Once you know your splits at different points in the run you can work out pace for different sections of the run. If you know your split times every mile, you can work out your pace for the first mile, second mile and so on.
