I like the early morning runs best. But even though I'm out at around 5.40 am there are a surprising amount of people up and about going to work

yes gosh you are an early bird!! advantage of morning runs are that

1) training is out of the way for the day so you can relax

2) you can eat what you want during the day as you dont have to go training later

3) you will sleep better cos i find after evening training I cant relax!!

I'm an evening runner.

I like it dark and cooler although that will change with summer around the corner.

I like breaking up the evening and doing something other than sitting on my bum.

I like my hubby and daughter to know how committed I am and set them an example.

I'm dieting and so I like to run after dinner has gone down to give me energy.

It's the one time of day where I can be consistent and fit the habit into my day.

Snap! I too have a family and an evening run fits in our daily routine. If circumstances were different though....... I'd go in the morning :-)

I read somewhere recently that people who run early in the morning are more likely to stick at it - I don't know how true that is generally but I'm sure it applies to me. I'm sure I wouldn't enjoy it so much if I ran later in the day. It's also a time when I'm less likely to be distracted by other demands on my time, not least because there's no-one around to make those demands ! I think it gives me a bit of a natural high for the day too.

I did a back clinic once because I have a dodgy back sometimes and they said that running wasn't good for joints and backs first thing in the morning (ie get out of bed and going straight for your run) because your body dehydrates over the night and it needs time for the bones/spine to rehydrate again. Apparently more damage can be done if they are dehydrated.

So I guess drink plenty of water when you get up and perhaps don't go straight away.

I hasten to add that this is just what they said and I haven't read any scientific proof on the matter.

Ultimately in our busy lives we mostly run as and when we can fit it in.

thats an interesting point...might be why its so difficult to get going first thing in a morning

mornings for me. I'd love to get out before the kids are up but realistically thats not going to happen so i try to get out as soon as they are dropped off at school.
