Adios to Rain Bombs - Hello 4 Rom Coms - W6 R1

Adios to Argentina, some of the worst carnival weather recorded by the Portenos (as the BA locals are known) Our hotel receptionist apologised when she saw us for the fourth time on the penultimate day in yet another change of clothes…. 4 sets of clothing drenched…. Shoes squelching and the rather hopeful Factor 50 sunscreen remaining unused and unloved.

It had been hot and sultry, just no clear skies nor sun, with the weather improving on the day we leave… Aarrgghh

JCR discussing with Mr JCR the possibility of keeping to one day run, one day rest and going for a run when we get back from the flight. He said it wouldn’t happen…

Settled in on the plane, 14 hours to kill . Most of the movies were animation ( I’m not a snob on film, but little point seeing Despicable Me Four when you haven’t seen 1, 2 or 3. Or we could go to the Marvel and other Superheroes - yawnfest. Or how many StarWars films are there exactly?

Into the world of romcoms, where the two protagonists hate each other, find each other quirky maybe fall in love , have a falling out then some catalyst occurs that makes them realise they’re in love anyway.

Usually starring Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Drew Barrymore, Sandra Bullock, Charlize Theron ….

Male lead invariably Hugh Grant….

Couldn’t sleep on the plane - 4 RomComs it was. Sweet November, The Proposal, The View of Us and finally The Songwriter, all reliable following the romcom formula.

Eventually the romcom fatigue hit and I was able to sleep, But it was utterly pointless trying to run with jet lag when we got home

An extra day’s rest made all the difference. I made my way to Alien Abduction lane - it always looks like the kind of road where someone would spot a UFO. I know from previous experiences on C25K that W6 R1 can catch you out.

With my Julia Robert’s romcom persona in place, I looked at Alien Abduction Lane with suspicion. It looks innocent enough but it’s sunny and little shade, things might happen to me on this road… Actually nothing did - Mr JCR was walking our two greys and I was accompanying him on the walk intervals then running away and back on the run intervals.

Fibi Fardashian (the female grey) did get quite perturbed at me running away, she has attachment issues which have been sorely tested by us being AWOL for two weeks. She tried to drag Mr JCR after me - he was not a happy bunny as he can’t run - no really he can’t- spinal injury means no jarring exercise is possible.

At this stage me as Julia Robert’s realised that this land had more to offer - its romcom quirk was that it has a small lane off road, towards an orchard. Good idea I thought, off tarmac onto grass a good switch of surface.. This was the romcom part of potential falling in love material. Off I set on the eight minute interval and all was going swimmingly I just couldn’t work out exactly when to turn back to run back to Mr JCR.

This is when the quirk became the romcom falling out. The grass had tyre treads and was a bit more uneven than I’d really spotted, so much so that the return trip took longer and was more energy sapping. We had the romcom falling out at that stage. I didn’t like that bit of the lane any more at all.

Three minutes later Jo Cool was reminding me that the W6 interval run can seem harder after doing the big W5 20 minute one.

Then of course in true romcom style I realised we loved each other really and the grassy track wasn’t a big deal.

Cue sloppy music and Hugh Grant telling me he loved me and smooching accordingly.

The real story - I ran it, the grassy track was a bit of a pain and I didn’t fall apart on this run, although on previous C25k attempts this week has been the hard one.

I could have been a Runaway Bride, certainly wasn’t a Pretty Woman, nor was I Top Gun, but Week 6 Run 1 is done

You certainly had an interesting stay in BA, glad that your spirits managed to stay undampened, unlike the rest of you :)

I've been doing a lot of travelling lately and I find that it doesn't matter if it's a couple of hours in a plane or a day or five days in the car, I just can't run the first day I get home. Sitting in one place, carrying luggage, all the joys of airports etc just seem to knock all the running bones out of alignment, but a couple of nights in my own bed and I'm raring to go.

Having said which, grabbing a sneaky run in the morning before a day's driving can be just what's needed.

Welcome home :)

Thanks I agree with you on travelling. I used to travel to the US a lot and there’s something discombobulating about travel that messes up the bod. Sneaky runs early also work so well as it warms up here I have to do those as a matter of course….

A result for you! I managed Week 5 Run 3 today - a bit slower than previous runs with walking - I guess I slowed down intentionally to make sure I could complete the 20 minutes. The sunshine brought out the weekend day trippers on our unclassified village road so I ended up jumping onto the verge a few times (or into the hedge when there was no verge) - better to be safe than 😔 The uphills were tough but worth it for the downs. I sometimes go to our nearest sandy beach and run along the hard low tide sand - flat, but I miss the ups, downs, bends …

Brilliantly done deliberately slow is a good tactic - speed can come later when we’re stronger and shiny graduates again! Verge jumping not ideal either - great job. Tomorrow I’m uppy downy again….

We are getting there run by run

How you getting on? Any more verge jumping?

Unfortunately my 93 year old mum fell last Thursday and broke her hip and is in hospital - missed a run but managed to get out today for week 6 run 3 (25mins) I went slowly and really enjoyed it. So good to be outside in the countryside - dairy cows waiting by the gate hoping it was milking time. Loving the ease of downhills and slowing right down for the ups. Yes - standing on the verge for the tractor to pass by!

So you are a whole week ahead now 😅

It’s always the way - life has a nasty habit of throwing stuff at you or in this case your mum. Hope she’s doing well and mind out for those tractors we don’t want you joining your mum having been taken out by a wayward tractor. Well done on managing your still get out.
