Any tips for running in the rain? I have avoided it so far but at the moment, here in Canada, when it's warm enough to want to run, it's often raining. It's quite like to get out there regardless.
What to wear? Rainwear, something else, or just usual running gear and accept that I'll get soaked?

Hi RunDone , I almost always just get wet! This morning I was treated to a mix of rain, sleet and hail, just as I was heading up one of the steeper hills on my route, and with a minimum 4k to get home. It was laugh or cry, so I laughed!
If you go for rainwear, you definitely need something light and breathable. I do have a proper water-repellent jacket, as it was required equipment for a trail event, but I don't often carry it and think I've only used it once.
Thanks! When it's been cold I've been running in a long sleeved T and a sweatshirt. I was leaning towards ditching the sweatshirt and just running in a Tshirt if it's raining (avoiding a soaked heavy sweatshirt) - and just not running at all if it's rainy AND too cold for just a T. Sounds like I'm on the right track! Thanks again.
I find I don't like setting off into the rain, but usually once I'm warmed up I barely notice if it starts to rain. So I wait for a break in the rain and then set out. Also, I look at the hour by hour forecast on my phone and plan to run when the weather is expected to be nicer.
As IannodaTruffe said above, we are already waterproof, so I go out in shorts and a T-shirt. Once your moving you warm up anyway. Rain is the best weather to run in
Once warmed up, you really don't notice the rain, as long as the "feels like" figure is above about 6°C. You will feel it if you don't get in a warm place fairly soon after you've stopped running.
Even in cooler weather, if you are wearing layers on top, the moisture next to the skin will form an insulating layer. Water is not good at conducting heat if confined. This is how a wetsuit works. However, there is a temperature below which this effect doesn't work effectively. If there is any wind chill you will get cold.
I just wear a long sleeved top and leggings in the cold, rain or not. I do have a favourite top to wear if it’s raining. It’s fleece lined and doesn’t cling to my chest the same as the others I have. I don’t bother with layers or jackets and have found I’m fine upto around zero celcius. I was out in the snow in that gear at weekend….
It’s all personal preference though - two years ago if someone told me I’d soon own 8 different running tops I’d have laughed at them…. Best way is to see what works for you.
Hi, I'm on wk5 now and I joined the gym as the weather here is horrendous and I can stay focused better, the treadmill is now my bestie, water and towel to hand, may be an option for you, even if it's just a week or so
Just embrace it! I love running in the rain, I do wear a thin breathable rain resistance jacket but like Iannoda Truffle says, we seem to have waterproof skin!! Yes my socks and shoes get wet, but there is definitely something about running in the rain that you just can't beat!😂🏃♀️
I check the forecast for a break in the rain before I set off (can't leave the house in a torrential downpour) but once I'm out there I love nothing more than running in the rain, especially if the torrential downpour is at the last half a kilometre, gives me the incentive to run my fastest!! 😁No rain proofs worn by me! 🏃♀️💦💪
I have a light shower resistant running jacket, which I use mainly when there's a cold wind - it keeps me dry enough until I'm warmed up enough not to care. And a running cap - the peak keeps the rain off my glasses (unless there's a downpour, then the glasses go in my pocket and the peak keeps the worst out of my eyes). My standard running leggings dry out fast enough, and I'm used to my feet getting wet.
If I drive somewhere for a run, I throw a towel over the car seat.
The worst bit of running in the rain is getting out there and getting wet.The best bit is once I reach the stage when I can't get any wetter and the inner child comes out demanding that I run through as many puddles as possible!I tend to wear a lightweight windproof jacket over usual running top and bottoms and make sure the washing machine is available for use straight after my run!
Through trial and error I just accept getting soaked. If it starts raining while I’m running, I don’t really notice it, and it’s so invigorating. I have to wear a peaked cap because I wear glasses, otherwise I’d need windscreen wipers! But all in all rain running is pretty fun, you feel like a little kid again, and quite rufty tufty too 🤣.
