I would welcome some advice. I am on week 3 / run2 this morning, but its raining heavily. I am using sketchers so far (in case i did not continue). Is it safe to run in heavy rain and thunder? I dont mind getting wet (id prefer it to heating up in my plastic mac) but my phone will not be happy and my shoes will get soaked. I dont think they will dry out for the next run. Also scared of slipping.
Hmm, two hours ago and you've probably made your decision but...
My first truly heavy rain run was around that run in the programme. I put my phone in a plastic bag with the headphone cable pointing downwards. Shoes - they should just get wet! Just leave them somewhere to dry after, maybe take out insoles to help the process.
You should treat yourself to running shoes, though. My limited experience suggests that not only are they of course reducing the risk of injury, they dry out well (presumably because they're made for you to sweat through!). Perhaps buying them might help with the incentive to continue...

I did go out in the end. Drenched at ten paces!! But thankfully, the thunder and lightning seemed to be dying out about five minutes after i started off.
I covered my old phone in cling film and used my old earphones (which i recently replaced to wireless ones reccommended on this forum (tootronics?))
I decided that if the shoes died, it would definitely be time to replace them. I will pull out the insoles as you have suggested. They had newspaper in them for a bit and i have left them on the floor near the towel rail in the bathroom (warmest place in my house).

Run more slowly, place your feet deliberately, put your phone in a plastic bag, or wrap it in clingfilm once you've started the app/podcast, remove the laces from your trainers after the run, stuff the shoes with newspaper and leave them to air (in the airing cupboard if you have one - but don't put them on a radiator or anywhere else hot in case the glue softens). I try to put wet running shoes somewhere sunny if possible.
When it is raining I run with a baseball cap (to keep the rain out of my eyes / off my glasses).
I always put my phone in a plastic sandwich bag no matter what the weather.
I love running in the rain - it distracts me so much from the mechanics of running that it feels like a breeze. So what if yiu get wet - you're probably having a warm shower when you get in anyway. Honestly go for it, you'll be suprised how fine it is.

Don't go out running in thunder as thunder means lightning: other than that I enjoy running in the rain myself.

link 2 American running site; different weather to UK perhaps but lightning is not something I'd want to attract.
I Iove any weather, not bothered about getting soaked or about my trainers getting soaked either, and believe me, I can be a fussy fart on times, lol. Just go for it, you may or may not slip, it's something we cannot totally prevent. Just be careful really.
My trainers got soaked back in June and I mean soaked, but they dried fine I over night, next, but not on, the radiator.

Running shoes allow rain/water to pass through. Unless they’re Gore in which case they don’t 🙂

If you have good quality running shoes they should have good tread on them. Keep off metal gratings and drain covers, oh and those dreaded wooden duck boards 🙂👍
Thanks. I used a thin shower proof hooded rain jacket which i knew would not keep me dry, but might keep me warmer. It was fine really.

I know i am waterproof, so once i had waterproofed my phone, told my husband i was going (safety), decided to use my original ear phones and decided not to worry about the shoes, i set out about twenty minutes after i posted.
What did it for me, was realising that if i wanted running to really become part of my life, i would have to learn to cope with heavy rain. So off i went...
Just realised that means whether my shoes are ruined or not, i need proper running shoes!!!🎉
Wahey! Brilliant! Rainy running was also a reason I thought "you know ... I might stick at this!" Also I remember the park being empty apart from intrepid dog walkers ...
