If really works 😊

I haven’t t posted on here for a while so thought I would give you an update.

My treadmill broke AGAIN nearly 4 weeks ago and I haven’t run since then. I went on a weeks holiday to the lakes and intended trying to run outside. I did try but it didn’t work out 😢 still I did do a few long walks 👍🏻

My husband managed to fix my treadmill on Sunday so I started again on Monday morning. I was dreading it - thinking I would have lost all my stamina but found that I could run for as long as I did before - I actually ran for 35 minutes - very slow pace 🐌🐌🐌 I’m nowhere near 5K but I’m not bothered as long as I can still run for at least 30 minutes.

Today I ran for 25 minutes but ran a bit faster - or a little less slow 😊 🤣

I only started C25k in May 2021 and consolidated in July/Aug so it just shows how good the programme is. I had never ever run before but I now look forward to seeing what I can achieve and one of these days I WILL run outside 👍🏻

Just out of interest, what were your problems when you tried running outside?

I’ve tried a couple of times and apart from the fact that I’m really self conscious I find it really hard on my knees. I found a nice flat route but it was quite busy with dog walkers. TMI I had also forgot to wear the most important piece of kit my sports bra 😢😢🤣 I gave up and went for a long walk instead 😊

I can see how the lack of a certain garment might be a problem.

The usual things that treadmill runners do when outside is overstride (hard on the knees) and go too fast (because you haven't got a control panel in front of you dictating your pace).

I have a lot of respect for treadmill runners, it took me a long time to be able to run on one!

The lakes doesn’t give me images of ideal territory for a first outdoor run though, very little of it is flat, apart from the wet bits 🤣

It’s great to hear that your treadmill is fixed, you haven’t lost your fitness and that you are running smart. Slow and long, fast run shorter… call it what you will, everyone has their fast! As your slow gets quicker so will your fast.

Local parks with duck ponds tend to offer a nice flat circuit for transitioning to outdoors… there are other options in most places. Where I live is pretty hilly, but there are some places nearby where they play sports, so some nice flat grass routes too. Transition to outdoors is strange, but in a few runs you’ll get it!

Happy running.

Thank you - I did find a nice flat route alongside a river and I did try - see above 🤣🤣

I can’t run outside due to joint issues that are aggravated by running on anything uneven or too hard, so I sympathise - but if you prefer running on a treadmill to outdoors don’t beat yourself up about it, the important thing is getting your gear on and doing it. At least you tried 🙂

I’ve had a few multiple-week breaks from running (due to illness or lethargy) and am surprised at how easily I get back into it - I always expect to be panting like a dying dog but I nearly always find it much easier than I expected! Like you, I run at a snails pace (in fact, snails could probably overtake me!) but I definitely feel much better after a run.

Glad your hubby was able to fix your treadmill so you can get back running 🏃‍♀️

Happy to hear there are more treadmill runners out there. I used to feel a bit of a fake doing it on a treadmill but figure that so long as I'm moving its better than not. Like you one day I might get outside, thats the aim.

Yea that’s how I feel at least I’m doing something - which is far more than I was doing 4 months ago 😂 I’m finding I’m enjoying it more as well - I seem to have quietened the voices in my head telling me to stop and have a rest ✋

Hi there. Sounds like the running is going really well for you so you shouldn't feel pressured to run outside unless you really want to. I can't imagine running for more than 20 minutes on a treadmill but I am comfortable (now) running outside where I can speed up and slow down without going into orbit if I press the wrong button-coordination isn't my strong point!

If you really want to run outside had you thought of perhaps substituting just one of your treadmill runs a week with an outside run and following the C25k program from the beginning just for that one run a week for a few weeks to give you chance to adjust whilst not losing the benefits of your treadmill runs ?

I love running outside but I also think "if it's not broke don't fix it!"

Happy running 🏃‍♀️
