What’s this, why does it ache and what can I do?

Please excuse my lack of artistic skills, but what bit of the knee apparatus is the arrow pointing to? It’s the inner side, just below the knee, towards the front. It aches, not badly thankfully, and sort of comes and goes. Would it help to wear a knee support? I’ve got one that covers the shaded area.

Any suggestions before I attempt my 20 minute Wk 5 Run 3 tomorrow, weather permitting?

PS my feet don’t look like that

Follow the advice in the guide to the plan on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

It could be your elbow.........

Maybe I should practice drawing not running 😂😂😂

Hope you find what the pain is about.

We did post something about knee pain and knee-focussed workouts a few weeks ago on the strength and flex forum, so that might be of interest. (See link below)

Specifically the link from Physiotutors tinyurl.com/5aj5z7uy might actually be useful to identify what is going on, but a live physio who can interact with you would probably quite quickly identify the issue and help identify a workout routine to strengthen your knees.

But until then here is the post about knee-focussed workouts, which I hope helps maybe just a bit: healthunlocked.com/strength...

I damaged my MCL (Google) last year twisting awkwardly stepping into the car. Sounds about the same place as you described - but there is a lot going on in the knee so could be something else!! I went to a physical therapist 3 times over 4 weeks and was back dancing again after the therapy plus her exercises to strengthen muscles in legs to support the knee. Oh and I wore a support for a while (watch out for an allergic reaction..take it off if you start getting itchy/skin hot!) Aside from going to see a professional my tip is to make sure you're not twisting your knee joint- turn your whole body when turning so your legs stay forward, if you get me!

Edit...when I say Google I meant if you want to see where I damaged..the physical therapist diagnosed it😀

Please don't do it like that. I used Google to identify my knee pain, and paid for it dearly. Knees are complex, and the guys who deal with them are sports physios and osteopaths. When they treated me, they targeted areas that were nowhere near where the pain was. Good luck!

I agree. Knees are funny things. If the pain just isn't going away, it's time for a visit to the doctor. If you can actually find one who hasn't been furloughed.

Hi my knees were bad last year was in pain and struggled walking. Getting out of bed and going upstairs was painful. Went to physio 4 times and was out of running for 4 months. Restarted again this year and graduated again. Hopefully this doesn't happen to you take care .

Reading these comments physio is the way to go!

I used to have bad knees, I think what sorted them out in the end was doing leg strengthening exercises with lots of repetitions but using only bodyweight. I also used to drive a lot for work, which aggravated them and I no longer do that.

Good luck.

I know physio can help, I’ve done it before and it’s like magic! I’m thinking my next car will be an automatic as gear changes can be quite uncomfortable.

My right knee used to feel like it was on fire when driving, when I was given a van with cruise control it was such a relief.

I’m lucky it’s my left knee so only the clutch is a problem

Pretty much any new car is an electric or a hybrid nowadays, which means it is pretty much guaranteed that it will be an automatic. The days of manual gearboxes are numbered.

I’ve decided I probably need to speak to the doctor but I’m really worried they’ll tell me to stop. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen. Must look up my old physio’s number.

That is exactly where I hurt mine on graduation day. I have only run once in the last few weeks, and my advice is to limit its use as much as daily life allows. Strapping helped, and I even had an elasticised one on at night which made it very hot which seemed to help.Whatever you do, DO NOT try and run until it is saying that it is happy for you to try. Then, only short ones.

I also found that Deep Heat balm helped, but that seems to take away the pain and not really help heal. Time and rest seem the only real solutions.

Most of your body's weight goes through your knees [they call me Sherlock for a reason!], so it takes a real pounding. Look after them like they are the two best look and most virginal daughters a man ever had.
