Hello any advice around running shoes ? Lots of people tell me to buy a larger size and wondered what you kind, experienced people think? I’ve had plantar problems and think I need better shoes.

Many thanks

Best advice would be to get a gait analysis from a dedicated running shop then see what they advise. What other people like or recommend could be totally unsuitable for you

This is a link from the guide to the plan to a post about buying running shoes. healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Take other people's recommendations with a pinch of salt..........they are not you, do not run like you and their favourite shoe might injure you.

Definitely go into a shop to get advice and try some on. I ended up buying a pair that was 1 1/2 sizes bigger than my day-to-day shoes, which I would never have tried without the advice of the staff there. They were also really helpful in finding the best shoes for the way I run (physically) and what I need them for.

Thank you the ones I have are just half a size up. A bit embarrassed about going into a running shop as I’m more of a shuffler but if it helps I will do it 😊

I'm only a shuffler too but they didn't bat an eyelid. They've seen all sorts come in, and it's only sensible to buy decent shoes when you're starting out rather than months down the line isn't it? You'll never get to be a more confident runner if you don't get shoes that sort your foot problems (and potentially knee, hip, back problems) out... I had to get an appointment with my local shop but they gave me a 45 min slot (rather than a bigger chain nearby that was only doing 15 mins, not that great for your first pair of runners) and the advice gave me confidence. Plus, I'm ok to take them back in the first couple of weeks if I find they don't suit me after all.

One full size up and get a high drop for those issues

Brooks tend to be 12mm

I went to “Up and running” I ran on a tread mill and they were able to advise me on the best shoe for me. They actually recommended 1 shoe size bigger for me but it depends on your feet and gait as to what you will need.Lots of fun with your shopping and journey.🤗x

As others have said, get a gait analysis done, or if you can't, at the very least do a wet foot test [Google it] to see what shape your foot is. Also, look at some old footwear to see what the wear pattern is like. Finally, don't be pressured into buying this year's latest fashions - last years shoes are just as good, and they were the wonder-shoes of last season! Take your time, try lots and NEVER be pressured into buying the ones the assistant wants to sell you. If it is a good shop, they will put you before profit.

Good luck and happy running.

Good to hear that you are heading to a proper running shop. Remember, most running shop staff are runners and are happy to help, but some will be a little less interested in you, and more so in their bottom line!Make sure that you get the ones best suited to you, and make sure that you can wear them at home for a decent amount of time and exchange if necessary.

Good luck, and happy running.

Oh, if they have a decent treadmill, make sure you try the shoes out on that and not just use it for the gait analysis.

Glad you asked your original question as all the answers have helped me as well. I am new to running so will follow the advice and go to a local running store to try on several types and see what suggestions are offered by the staff.
