This morning, I mapped out my route for 5km, plugged in my headphones and just... went for it.
My time was about 43:10. And I'm just so proud of myself. SO proud of myself. I have a faraway goal of getting to 5km in 30 minutes and who knows when that will happen. And if it never does? Who cares! I am enjoying it and running for the fun of it.
But, in the meantime? I ran an ENTIRE FIVE KILOMETRES.
Me, the girl in high school who couldn't run 4 x 150m laps of our small oval.
Who am I?

Congratulations on completing your first 5k, not long before you can get a sub 40 minute 5K then onwards and upwards to that sub 30 minute 5k 🏃🏾, well done 😀 🏃🏾.
My first ever reply ... read your post & it touched my heart (I was that girl too, you know the one who never got picked in sports, so I feel your pain) WELL DONE YOU! 🎉 you so deserve it & I'm on week 6 and you have totally inspired me thank you x
Wow, big congratulations! You should be so proud, being able to run a 5k is very impressive I've tried and failed to run past 30 minutes - do you have any tips on how to shut out your mind and just run? x
Are you doing the C25K program? It will definitely help you get to 30 minutes of running if you follow it.
My biggest tip is to think about anything else other than running. I use running as a way to daydream, to think through problems at work, to let myself calm down over a friendship issue, etc. It's like a therapy session with myself.
Also, focus on form. Breathe in and out. Shoulders back. Eyes straight ahead. Form really helps.
I'm a graduate from the C25K program actually. I'm able to run 30 minutes but unfortunately I'm not able to run 5k in that time nor any further at the moment.
Great tips thanks, I always find my mind straying so that's a good idea.
Fantastic achievement, well done you!👏👏👏Don't chase speed too much. I graduated over a year ago and I still can't run 5k in under 30 minutes. I can run 18k slowly though, and I'm aiming for a half marathon.
Even if you want the speed, distance is the thing to concentrate on.
All PE teachers should be forced to read every single post on this forum. They may realise how they have contributed to obesity issues, confidence issues and the lack of fitness in society.
If only they had concentrated on ALL students and not just those in the school teams.
I completely agree with you. PE in school was a chore rather than it being fun and learning about fitness and health in a way that would last me a lifetime.
What a fantastic post, I can feel how great YOU are feeling 😁😁😁😁👍, and so you should. I'm with you on running just for the sheer pleasure it brings. We all have different running goals.... enjoyment sounds like one of the best goals to me. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy and then some more. 🦌🐢🐌🏃♀️🙋
