I set off on ‘Graduation Run 2’ this morning, heading off into a stiff breeze. I took Jo with me just for company, replaying WK9R3, but I cheated her a bit, I started running two minutes into the five minute brisk walk, so that when she said ‘if you are ready, then off you go’, I’d already been underway for three minutes. I felt bad! I did it though because I’d been going no further than three and a bit kilometres on Graduation about ten days ago. My theory was that each time if I could manage runnng for a short bit longer, after a few more weeks I may get to 4K then the Holy Grail of 5K in a few months time. So today, When Jo said ‘Well done, you’ve done it’ i’d been trundling along slowly for 33 minutes. Le’s just see if I can do another hundred yards I thought.
Then the wizardry that is this programme took over. Up the steep hill and then on a bit more, even the horse with big teeth seemed confused because he saw me for the first time running past him twice in one day, once in each direction. Before too long I was at a place I knew to be 4K, and I felt a great sense of achievement albeit feeling a bit tired by then. I slowed my steps a bit, but out of nowhere, a gust of wizardry wind behind me and I could feel the Wizard was there, running along my side. Along further unbelievably actually, but around the next bend I went, and past the farmers sheep. One doffed it’s cap! Still onwards with just two hundreds yards to go to get to 5K the Wizard and I went, and just a few seconds later we were there. The wind blew one more time and the Wizard had gone, leaving me at 5.15K. Well, my God, what has just happened! Unbelievable for an ageing older chap who just a couple of years ago beat the big C, and today achieved something that I’ll not ever forget.
