I'm on week 1, run 2 and had a nightmare on run 1 with the app losing its place in the cycle if the screen turned off (e. g. when putting it in my pocket to run). For run 2 today, I kept my phone in my hand and set the screen time out to 2 mins and then it was fine. Surely this isn't the way it should work?

Later versions of Android aggressively shut down apps that are perceived as not being used by the system. This can be overridden in the settings menu. This depends on the phone model, you should be able to Google the proper settings.
These types of apps are the worst ones if you ask me. Besides the fact that you use their app and bring them money and visibility, you should follow many rules to use them. On the other hand, some apps pay you to play at partnersinfire.com/passion-... or use them because they want people to discover something new and valuable. I appreciate this type of app that wants to upgrade your life and add value or something like that. Every time I discover these apps, I delete them in the first couple of days. They are worthless and meant to kill your time and nerves.
Hi, sorry to see you are having problems! Have you checked your battery optimisation settings?
I had a similar situation. But first, I would advise you to clear the history and reboot the phone. If that doesn't help, there is another way. When I started making money online wealthofgeeks.com/apps-that... with games, I forgot to delete all unnecessary applications and clear the cache. That is, my phone was just overloaded with files that I didn't even use. It would seem that such obvious actions could have thrown me off. It's a good thing I got my phone to the repair shop in time and got instructions on how not to do anymore. But if these simple steps did not help you, I can safely advise you not to bother with it and go to a specialist.
