Runners knees!

I’m on my fourth week and disappointingly I’m having problems with the inside of my knees. It’s really painful. It started last week, I ran with it twice wearing knee supports and ibuprofen gel but it didn’t help much. Today I took ibuprofen before running and it was a bit better but still painful. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I really want to do this.

Thanks

Debbie

I’m really sorry. Our knees can literally be a “pain”. I guess you’ve seen the strengthening exercises on line? They can help. So can biking.

It could be runner’s knee but you might need some advice. Don’t keep running on an injury though. Hope things improve.

You could try the knee strengthening exercises - there's a link somewhere via the couch to 5 k website. Have a little rest for a few days and run slowly. Obviously I'm no expert but I had painful knees around the same stage in the programme as you and have arthritis in my knees already. The strengthening exercises really help.

Also do you have proper fitted running shoes? That made a big difference to me too. If it's a real injury then do see a GP but ibuprofen to get through a run might not be a great idea? Ibuprofen is a pretty strong drug!

I do have proper running shoes as I over pronate. I didn’t have any pain before I started and I do lots of walking. It’s just so annoying that I’ve finally got going and I feel great whilst I’m running, it’s just my legs stopping me!

I think the strengthening exercises are key. I also walk a lot but it's no substitute for lots of squats and leg raises! They make a difference quite quickly! Good luck

Well done.

Are you following the advice in the guide to the plan on minimising impact?
