Highlight of your running year 2019

What was your highlight of 2019 with regards to running?

I suppose mine was graduating to 10K when I ran my first 10K and joining the Parkrun family at my first parkrun in July.

May I wish everyone at C25K, B210K and the marathon forum all the very best on running for 2020.

For me, running my first half in February then my first official half in May at Liverpool Rock n Roll and finally my first full at Yorkshire. The full didn't quite go to plan but I did it and I'm in that 1% now. No one can take that medal away from me! I'm not doing another full in 2020 but in 2021 I'll have another go, now I know how to approach these beasts!

Happy New Year everyone - keep running!

Hello AlMorr , can I please have more than one highlight of 2019.

1. Graduating from c25k in February

2. Getting a sub 30 at parkrun in November

3. Getting to 10k in December.

And I always say it , I couldn't have done it without all my virtual running buddies like you.

Here's to even more in 2020🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🍾🍾

And I know it's not running related but I got married in July 2019 . So it's pretty special 💏

I do think that the best day for you this year was getting married.

You certainly can have more than one running highlight for the year, that sub 30 minute 5k at Drumpelliier was a excellent run for you, I wasn't there that day, congratulations for that time.

You are the only "virtual" runner I have met in person from this forum, I enjoyed meeting you at Drumpelliier on two of the 4 times I have ran there.

I am not sure if you are staying up late to see 2020 arrive, I will be watching BBC one from 11.30pm to 12.30am, get to bed and go a short walk in the morning.

I have been invited to my daughter's house tomorrow afternoon.

Have a great evening and all the best for 2020. 😊 🏃🏾

Happy New Year to you AlMorr!

Highlights would have to be my 4 marathon distance runs in Aug, Sep and Oct.

Hard to believe I have gone from such strength to not being able to run at all, but I'll be back soon I'm sure 🤞🏻

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate in reply toGoGo_JoJo

Congratulations on so many marathons in such a short time, perhaps running them so close together took its toll on you, I just hope that you will be able to run again not before too long.

Happy New Year and enjoy your running once you are off the IC.

Definitely graduating C25K in September. I'm starting to lose that feeling of being an impostor finally, but still find it hard to believe I did it! This is a lovely forum (I don't do social media as a rule) and I think finding it has also been one of the highlights of the past 3 months. Happy New Year to all and keep running 🏃‍♀️

There was a person who said that this forum was the best social media forum on the Internet, no surprise on that, I fully agree, happy New Year to you Archerygoddess.

Wishing you a very happy New Year Al

The highlight of my running year was getting back out to run after 5 weeks with swollen blistered feet due to psoriasis we had only completed week 1 when my feet got to bad to walk let alone run and I doubted we would be able to carry on with C25K

Then out we went hobbling and in pain way too early but I needed to be able to do this, it’s life changing and has been an amazing year

AlMorr profile image

I wish you WillowandSola a happier running New Year, hopefully your runs won't be marred by swollen blistered feet as it was this year.

I guess my first reaction would be completing C25K.

However, on reflection, my highlight was run 3 of week 5.

I think it was the first run that I really enjoyed. I mean, start to finish enjoyed. And that was possibly a turning point for me mentally. At that point, I knew I could do this and, secretly, I think it fired my inner competitive nature and spurred my on to complete 5k in 30 minutes.

A very happy new year and let's raise a glass to hitting lots more running goals!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate in reply toRunningMigster

Yes, I do think that run 3 of week 5 is probably the most important run of C25K, you do feel nervous before you run it, if you complete it as most folk do then you know that you will be able to complete the course.

I felt more nervous before 5.3 than 9.3, the graduation run because of the difference between running for 8 minutes then 20 minutes, whereas by run 3 of week 9 you have already ran 4/25 minute runs, 3/28 and 2/30 minute runs so a third 30 minute one is just, well another 30 minute one, of course I did feel a bit nervous before 3.9 but very chuffed after I completed it.

Wishing you a very happy New year for 2020. 😊 🏃🏾

RunningMigster profile image
RunningMigsterGraduate in reply toAlMorr

I'm a big believer in mental preparation. So I spent a couple of days preparing myself for this run. Working through the tough bits in my head and how I'd deal with it. So in a way, I think I over prepared for it, which helped it feel so much easier and enjoyable than any of the previous runs!

Saxart profile image

Mine would have to be

1. Starting a c25k course on May and graduating in July

2. Finishing a parkrun in December sub 30.

3. Training for 10k, not quite there yet but have entered Bristol 10k for May 2020.

A tie.

It sounds a bit big headed - but crossing the finish line before some of the much younger guys in the Marine Corp HM gave me such a feeling of gratitude and joy as I have rarely experienced :)

And, a far gentler but no less welcome event...

Still haven't met any of my VRBs in person, but did get to phone one very briefly for NYE :)

mrrun profile image

Lone marathon. As hard as it could be but also inspiring. I never wanted to run with anyone else and marathon just nailed my belief in importance of lone running. I'm doing my own thing and getting ready for the second so if the left knee agrees l will start something else, the preps for ultra.

Happy New Year to you AlMorr , and to the rest of you VRBs!

My highlight was just getting out there, followed by the amazing feeling having completed the Couch25k, followed by completing 10k and further. 2020 should be a year in which we can be pleased with ourselves for our previous achievements and look forward to our new ones! Let’s start with Runuary😉 and take it from there!

For me

1. getting started was the biggest achievement...then

2.running in a different country (taking my gear with me and having the guts to up and go in a strange land) and finally

3. Doing my first park run and 5k!

Happy new year to you too, here’s to more in 2020!

My highlight was completing c25k at the end of September. Even running 10k didn’t compare to how pleased I was at graduating c25k as the it was the start of my running journey. Hope you have a great new year almorr.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate in reply toMaz1234

The big one is graduating from C25K probably more than running a 10K and graduating from that, particularly if its the same year, in my case I graduated in 2018 from C25K and the 10K graduate was 2019, IF they had been both the same year I would have gone for C25K as the highlight of my running year.

Cracking the actual 5k run in under 30 minutes.

The low point is breaking my toes in October and, sadly, one of them still isn't healed. :(

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate in reply toCrolla

So sorry for your broken toes Crolla, I hope they heal soon and you can get back to running, the 30 minute time is excellent, I am not sure if I will ever break that.

Crolla profile image
Crolla in reply toAlMorr

Thank you. I did manage a short run yesterday so things def on the up!

Now, I'm not sure how long it took me to crack the 5k under 30mins after graduating as my fitbit isn't that reliable, but it was definitely around the 6/7 month mark, so carry on! One thing that helped was when I started to vary the runs a little, so I'd do a 20 minute faster run, a 40 minute slow, and a 30 minute normal run.

My highlight was getting started on the c25k journey at the beginning of May. I graduated 9 weeks later and at 62 I have found something I love doing. It has helped so much with depression, oh, and the weight loss!

Finding this forum is a very close second, the support and friendliness has helped enormously.

Thank you fellow runners, Happy New Year to you all. x

The goal for 2020 is to run at least one Parkrun and to get to 10k. There, I've said it now! :)

Ginter profile image
GinterGraduate

I started C25K in August, graduated and did my first park run in November, got a PB of 26:34 on Christmas Day and ran 10k for the first time on 30th December (in under a hour).

I have loved my journey into running and look forward to continue in this the year of my 65th birthday.

Speedy60 profile image
Speedy60Graduate

I want to say graduating - it was such a good run and still my PB. However, there was a run before that, I don't remember which one, but the weather conditions were perfect, I'd finally got my posture sorted, no aches and pains, all was right with the world. That was the day I thought, oh my god I'm going to do this, I'm going to enjoy being a runner.

Happy New Year. May it bring peace and health. X

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate in reply toSpeedy60

Happy New Year to you Speedy60, I am sure you live up to your username, that run that you talk about 'before that' is probably run 3 of week 5, once many runners complete that one they are confident on graduating.

Graduating was defs the main highlight for me. It’s gave me a sense of accomplishment. I learned running is good for the soul however slow you may go! 😁

Another highlight is seeing how much fun my hubby had snowmobiling in the alps in February. He felt we should do this before we’re unable! 😂 I’m no adrenaline junkie.....and I lived to tell the story! 😂😂 I’ll say no more just that it was a good experience.

Also I know it’s been mentioned but having this forum to dip in and out of. Great having a bunch of virtual friends with the same goal .... just run 🏃🏼‍♀️

A good 2020 to all and happy running 🏃🏼‍♀️

And for me too, more than one please

1. Starting C25K in late Feb

2. Graduating in May

3. First 5k in June

4. Running 3 times a week between June - mid December

5. First 10k at end of October - followed by 4 more in next 5 weeks

Unhappily one lowlight - being on IC since mid December but hoping to start again this weekend.

One to look forward to - London Winter Run on Feb 9 2020.

Happy New (Running) Year everyone

Happy New Year

Highlights of my year were going under 30 minutes for 5K and running my first 10k around the beautiful waterfront in Oslo. 2020 is the year of the Edinburgh Half, so have started this year with a steady 5.6 miles with my dog this morning.

Happy running everyone.

Oldgirlruns profile image

Thank you AM! Happy running to you too in 2020! My 2019 highlight was definitely finishing C25K! And then getting to (a slow) 5k. Who’d have thought?! Onwards and onwards from here!

My highlight was graduating second time around after a bout of pneumonia in the spring. At the age of 65 I find it takes much longer to recover and I lose condition so quickly these days. I started the whole programme again, with a little tweak, and I was so pleased to get back to 5k 3 times a week. I'm quite happy to stay at this level and have running as a part of my life and I will keep it that way for as long as I can. Best wishes.

Ok so - first 30 mins, first 5k, first 60 mins and first 10k all so good 😊 - each time I never thought I would be capable.

But I will remember most - working towards my first year goal of - my first (and only!) 5k race at the beginning of December in 30 degrees heat in (dare I say!) Barbados!!! The medal 🏅 looks great and and straight onto beach 🏖 and into sea after!!’
