My sisters husband

I’ve not had any experience with running before starting C25K 4 months ago. I have every intention of entering the MK half marathon in may next year. I’m so proud of myself and I feel like I’m getting better with every run. Today I done 11k in 1hr 12mins and I was ecstatic.

I was telling my brother in law about the half marathon and asked if he wanted to train with me.. his reply (with an extremely smug face) was “you want to go at my pace then as I’m doing 9minute miles”. I was so upset that he was showing off that he was better than me. In my opinion, it makes him less of a person when he behaves this way and it makes me weary of who I talk to about my running. I’m sick of the put downs!!

I love this forum and I’m so grateful of the support given here. I just wanted to tell you all that you’re all wonderful and keep doing what you’re doing because no mater how fast or slow you are or how fat or thin you are, you’re perfect to me!! ❤️

He sounds like a complete doyle. You’re going fab. Keep going just to annoy him. It’d be my motivation.

Lol.. Doyle. Not heard that before 👍

Shame on him. He obviously has issues which probably go way beyond running. Be proud of your achievements - very proud.

Good job you can come on here and talk to us. He sounds like a smug idiot (I could think of lots of words but don't want to post on here)😂.

You've just ran 11k and you should be so proud of yourself as we all are.

You will run that half marathon no problem the way your running is going.

Well done you 😊😊👏👏👏👏👏

He’s an inadequate, insecure ********. You’re doing fantastically well, especially in such a short time. Don’t let him get you down nor dissuade you from the HM, and remember why you run - it’s certainly not for him.

Keep us updated on your progress.

Xxx

Yes I totally agree with grannytobe shame on him! 🤬

Don’t you dare be wary of who you tell! This is something to be proud of and whow what a great time!

You have done brilliant and I’m sure you will continue to do brilliantly and do that HM !👏👏👏🎊🎊🏃‍♀️

I run 3x week 🏃‍♀️

I find that I just run for myself although I do love to take part in the odd 5k runs and at the moment I’m seeing how many miles I can run in a month challenge. So far I have completed nearly 27 miles. So I’m pleased about that.

I did start the bupa 10 mile training programme and I soon got bored with that although I am still running the three days a week part of it.

So don’t be despondent and just enjoy yourself!🤗🤗🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Thanks so much everyone. You’re all wonderful xxx

You can look on his reply as a put down or as a realistic question.........Do you want to train at his pace?

Obviously it would not be sensible for you to attempt to keep up with him and it would compromise his development to run at your pace.

We all have to accept that our pace is our pace........others are faster, while others are slower........neither is better.

Look to your own pace, your own progress and your own achievements and just accept that some will outdo you......that is nothing to feel inferior about.

When I was at my fastest I could run 5k in the same time as Mo Farah..........except that he ran 10k in that time. Did I find this dispiriting? Certainly not.

Be charitable to your brother in law........his question was a valid one.

in reply toIannodaTruffe

If he had said it differently then I’d believe it was valid.

I will see it differently though now. I know I’m not as good as him but I will go at my own pace and who knows, in a years time, he might not be able to keep up with me.

IannodaTruffe profile image
IannodaTruffeMentor in reply to

I didn't hear his tone and don't know his personality, but you are as good as him..........slower maybe and female........men tend to be faster.

Don't compete with anyone but yourself.

in reply toIannodaTruffe

I apologise now IT! I think it was a big put down. And I agree with Elfe5. Yes I too didn’t see him or hear him but I think I’m old enough to read between the lines and understand a put down when I read it or see it for that matter!

Just saying ..............☹️

Hey Hidden ...don’t be disheartened, he is exactly that, a show off..what he doesn’t seem to realise is that not everyone is competitive, not everyone wants to win, not everyone is fast and not everyone is a show off....you are doing well...and you are doing well because you are going at your own pace and that is the best way of making sure you achieve what you set out to do..you have just run 11k!!! He might have run it quicker than you but really? Does that matter? Does it heck as like...! Whether 11k takes 1 hour 12 mins or whether it takes 45 mins it’s just as far! Well done to you...don’t be afraid of talking to anyone about your running, tell the world because it’s a wonderful thing that we all do x

People who brag about their speeds don’t do themselves any favours, this forum is a really lovely place and we all support each other even if like us are real slow runners

Hi, that’s not a very nice thing to say to you at all. I wouldn’t take any notice if someone did that to me😠

You’re doing superbly well and you’re doing this for you, so never compare yourself with anyone else, or let anyone compare themselves to you like that.🙂👍

There are so many good people on here who’ll support you every step of your journey👏👏

Good luck with everything and keep posting on here😀

That’s classic “make myself feel big by putting another person down” behaviour- and insecurity of some sort is behind that. ☹️

I suggest you roll eyes & refrain from talking about running with him for a few months. He might be older & wiser in the future as he sees your running develop.

Meanwhile we are delighted to cheer you on & share the pleasure of your running journey. 😄 I am super impressed with your 11k & half marathon plans, I have a long way to go before achieving such things- but I would like to... 😄

You get out there and run at whatever pace suits you, and no one else Hidden . As you’re finding out, the beauty of these forums is that we’re all accepting of each other, as the vast majority of us know how darned hard it was getting out on W1R1. But we all did. 💪

You carry on running and training for your HM. Tell us all about how it’s going because we really want each other to succeed. He can go and take a running jump. 🙃

Don’t worry it’s not you. Ignore him! Most runners are very supportive 🙂

We run smart. There’s no short cut. We have to work our way through the distances, taking our time. It’s fun though 😃

I’d give him a wide berth running wise if he’s a wise guy

I would love to hear how he would feel if Mo Farah turned round and said you can run with me but only if you can run 4.5 min miles, as Mo farrah HM time is around 59 mins and your brother in laws time is nearly two hours. I wonder what he would say to me as I persevere to get my first ever sub three hour HM 😂. Enjoy your training, look forwards to your event and don’t let him get to you. Happy running. Rfc x

Well sod him! You want to do your HM so go ahead and enter it without him. Do your training and then on the day enjoy yourself with all those people who are there to challenge themselves and have some fun at the same time. Be proud of yourself (I bet your sister is proud of you too!) - don’t forget to let us know how it’s going. You know we’re all with you (at your pace!) even if he’s not!

For lots of different reasons, many of us on here rely mainly on each other for encouragement, support and mutual rejoicing over our triumphs, both small and large. I’m from a running family in general, but we’re all at different stages - and ages, of course. Even in this family context there’s a danger of being a Running Bore to the others. 🤣 My Marathon Daughter is lovely when I’ve done an extra km, but really, once she’s said “Well done, Mum” there’s not much more of interest to say. Whereas the cohort of folks on here all moving towards 10k can feel every bend and hill of that last bit with me! And I with them, of course. 😄 It does make this a special place.

So I guess I’m saying Hang in there with running your own runs. And tell us, your VRBs, about it and let us enjoy it with you. And don’t worry about the rest. If they get it, great; but if not, oh well. Your recent experience does sound like a put-down, but let it roll off your back as not relevant to YOUR running. 😊

Forget about your brother in law’s aside and move onto the Marathon forum. You will get some great support and advice from those who have done C25k and have run or are aiming beyond 10k.

The best way to show him that distance is more important than speed is to do it your way.

Good luck

Perhaps he panicked and said any old horrid thing not knowing how to say "I don't like training with other people" (and sadly panicked people can still have smirks on their faces)
