Hi All,
I am posting on here in response to the following posts, Jaunty June Quests, Decisions, decisions, decisions; on this forum and Help, Simply blown away on the marathon forum. They have all been posted by our fabulous Floss for the benefit of all the fabulous forums .
I am going to respond to specifically how I felt after my first time round of C25K, how far I thought I could go and what I got up to, stuff I have tried, experienced gained red lines, overuse and poor training regimes.
The quick simple answers are as follows, elated but fooled myself, not very far, loads of stuff, lots, self inflicted injury.
So I am going to keep this brief, I felt elated on completing C25K first time round a year ago.But I now have to laugh at how I stupidly thought I was running much quicker than actual. No techie gear and miscalculated laps around a track.
I did read WHAT NEXT and very much more on Health Unlocked and must have had a 3 month consolidation period where I improved my trot from 48 mins to 40 mins for a 5k.
I did consider pursuing a standard predictor test to channel me down a best distance initial choice, but did not, and just bumbled on with gut feelings.
Never doubted my stamina, and thought I could trot all day,my how I needed to, 3.5 hours for a HM, how was I ever going to get to a full marathon, that’s a long shift.
So having pursued consolidation, HM ,in around 6 months, I then confronted myself with my lack of pace.
But I still hung onto my comfort zone, stamina / distance and started to pursue, far too early, everyday running , twice per day every day running for 3 weeks in each month.I was trotting 63 k each week.
Leave aside daily all body strength gym workouts.
Well it was a self inflicted overuse and very poor training regime for a novice trotter. But I would not change a thing. But certainly will not repeat that.
You must take your time and let your body repair. Its your repair days that determine all.
I am in a happy place, still a novice runner, but wow have I learnt some stuff on the magic forum and about myself and what to pursue and how I might do it.
To summarise what I am going to do over the next few months,
For my health, 12x30 second sprints per week, as per Get Fit In 6mins, mitochondria connection.
For my vanity pursuing 100/200/400/800 PR’s every alternative week using trotting/ cantering / galloping sessions.
The other week, 5k PR’s using trotting/ cantering/ galloping sessions.
Will be following Pete Magill, link on Marathon forum, other links on here and maybe anything eye catching on the Nike Running Club.
So in conclusion and I hope this may help someone on what not to do, we are all unique with different needs.
Take your time and first decide what you want from running and why you are doing it.
I am doing it for my health but I also want to know how fast I can run and sustain various paces over what distances.Of course it is a pleasure and the greatest gift I have given myself. It has changed my life.
There is a wealth of very experienced runners across the magic forums. All the solutions exist and the only initial challenge for under graduates and graduates is identifying what you wish/want to pursue.
Whatever your choice initially it is a blessing to run and the great thing is you can always change your mind as other opportunities open up for you on your journey.Relatively undamaged also.
I have learnt to respect the guidance rules.
I have learnt it’s a myth that you cannot increase your pace with age.
My hope is to achieve a sub 30 min 5k one day.I just would not have believed that maybe on the cards 3 months ago.
Eluid Kipchoge on his wrist band “ Humans Are Not Limited “. Similar sentiment at the top of Floss’s Jaunty June Quest.
Atb to everyone who is giving themselves the gift of running and may you find your
happy place and happy paces in your choices.
