Even more disappointed

After graduating the app on the treadmill last week I went out on the road yesterday and failed miserably. I’m thinking start from the beginning again but outside this time. Any ideas?

Oh the F word again (failed!). Running outside is a different experience, one which I prefer. Why not find a pleasant trail and perhaps start again at week 6:1?

Sorry to hear that. Any idea exactly what went wrong?

How far did you get?

Were you in pain?

There is a bit of analysis to be done before you throw the towel in and go back to the drawing board.

No clue what happened. It was like I’d never ran before. I was out of breath, I had a stitch just awful

Go out with no expectations this time. Remember your toxic ten. You need to get past that so your body can regulate your breathing and you will be able to relax into the run. Try to hold your pace pace at the beginning. Its easier to go off too fast when you are road running.

Dont give up supersally! You've graduated already. Running outside is different to the teadmill, I know from experience I did most of c25k on the treadmill. The surface is harder if you are running in the street, you have wind resistance and the pavement isnt moving under your feet! It takes time to adjust. Try going very, very slowly for about five minutes, get in to your stride and dont worry about taking the odd walking break! Remember you're running for fun now so dont look at 30 minutes as a target. Once youve adjusted you'll love it

Sally, it's a slightly different game. I'd done sub 2 hour ten miler before I tried the treadmill just a few weeks back with no bother.

First off - the TM was VERY hard work for me and secondly when I did reach ten miles on it I was, no joke, peeing blood after it.

You will adjust to roads FAR faster though than if you were just starting the programme so don't worry you are back at the beginning - you have a good foundation that just needs some adjustments, that's all.

The basic advice is the same - take it slow and steady and the results will accumulate sooner than you think :)

Wishing you many happy miles in your future 🙂

Treadmill and outside running are entirely different although some runners will be able to adjust to both without any problems. If you read my recent couple of posts you'll see I was in the same position as yourself a couple of weeks ago. Graduated last summer (running outside) then during the dark winter weather went onto the treadmill. My first run outside recently was disappointing and my thighs ached the next day ! I live in a town so it's road running everytime. To build up to running 5k outside again I went back to W3 and am now on W4. - I'm not in any rush - just want to enjoy being outside these spring mornings. If you can start at a later week with no problems I'd give it a try to see how you get on . Good Luck

Don’t think you need to go back to the beginning. Just don’t put pressure on yourself to run for 30 minutes to start with. Just go for an easy run, at a slower pace than on the treadmill.

(I’ve never used a treadmill myself but I’m told that when people move outdoors for the first time they tend to go too fast because they don’t have the machine setting the pace. Running slowly at the start of a run is a particular skill and it took me some time to learn it.)

I’d say take the pressure off yourself, do some very easy 15 minute runs (so you get past the toxic 10) but give yourself permission to run on a bit further if you feel OK. I used to set my watch to buzz every three minutes and make a point of always going to 12 minutes but after that I would just think to myself can I do three more? Run to the next buzzer - and kept doing that till I thought no, I’ll go to the next buzzer but then I have to stop. I once did 7k that way, just three minutes at a time. I don’t need to do that any more though.

Once you get used to running on different surfaces, and managing your own pace instead of having it set for you, you’ll be fine.

I haven’t got a clue how to slow diwn lol I’ll try though

For a long time I found it easier to set off at whatever speed came naturally and then consciously slow down after five minutes or so - setting a timer to remind me if necessary. It’s only recently I’ve been able to set off at endurance pace.

No you don't need to start again, running outside is different to being on a treadmill , you have been used to a set pace maybe outside you're going too fast . Go out try again and go slow , you will get used to running outside just stick with it 😊

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I’m going out again tonight and will take it slowly and no targets. I’d throw in the towel within you all

Would that be consecutive days running?

I know it's up to you but I can't see that being helpful.

Getting injured isn't likely to make you feel better.

Take it easy, stay safe.

I really can’t call it a run, it was that bad I’m embarrassed

Jell6 profile image

It was a run!. I have gone out and stopped after 1 km and walked home, but I still counted it, then again I don't want to repeat my weeks on the injury couch, and then the repeat of the programme, so maybe I am just too cautious.

Please take care.

You’ve changed my mind, I’ll try again tomorrow 👍

Good choice!, let us know how you get on.

The only part of running outside that I try to avoid ( apart from high winds and ice) is up and down kerbs, it always seems to make me feel like I have done something to my leg. I try to run on paths and lanes as far as possible.

Don’t be disheartened and never use the “f” word, it was a practice run. I always run outside and not sure what happened to you but take it alot slower than normal and don’t do large strides, make sure your feet land lightly too. I read on here that pretend your an “assassin” and try to be as quiet as you can when running and when your feet touch the ground. Good luck and positive thoughts - you can do it 🏃‍♀️

Hiya, I am just on day 1 week 2 (found it hard today) but last week I did day 2 in the gym on the treadmill... I definitely found it physically easier on the treadmill as the surface was even and flat, but found it harder in my head as I didn’t have much to distract me like you do outdoors...

You wont need to start but maybe go back a couple of weeks to ease yourself into the the higher impact of outside?

It is different.. that is all, just different. No need to start again... just head out.. slow and steady...

Inside, you are totally in control of everything.. outside.. there is just you and your legs and all that goes on, with each run is different each time!

Read this and relax...

womensrunning.com/2015/03/t...

Just head out..no idea of time or distance and just run, gently and slowly... x

I did all of my C25K and a couple of months consolidation happily on a treadmill. When I ventured out for the first time I barely made it 1km before I had to turn around and head back. I was using the Strava app and it showed me that I set off like Hussein Bolt 😄 plus I was running up a hill. That explained why I got out of breath so quickly and couldn’t carry on.

For my second run I went much slower and managed 5k but I did find it a lot tougher than the treadmill and came back with a hip injury. Rested for a bit then went back to the treadmill. I’ve only managed one more run outside and the hip pain is back even worse. I’ve rested for a week and today did 5k on treadmill, my hip is still sore but nowhere near as bad as running outside. I’m really not sure what I’m doing wrong outside so for now I’ll stick to the treadmill as for me the running itself is more important than where I do it. I did enjoy being outside so will probably try again as some stage. You’re not a failure at all, as the others have said, treadmill and outdoors are so different. Give it another go but take it at a much slower pace and stick a walk break in if you need it.

Hey don’t be too hard on yourself. Did you put your treadmill on an incline? They say to set it to 1 at least.

Do you really need to start back at week 1 though?

On the sunny side... you get to have that “journey” experience again and plenty of people here to support.

I’m going out again tonight so I’ll see how it goes and maybe start at week three

I did C25k first time around on the treadmill with at 2% incline and then I went for a run outside. It was so hard. I then joined a running group who were doing c25k from the beginning and I can now run 5k outside faster than I did on the treadmill. Starting again from the beginning gave me confidence. Don't see it as a failure but as your next challenge.
