Gearing up for my first run. The only thing I'm worried about is jogging in front of other people. And it's difficult to find a quiet place in Birmingham...perhaps the canals. I will try there first

I totally feel your pain! I initially went out in the dark or tried to time it when I thought it would be quieter! Now I'm more confident. A couple of tips people shared with me were: no-one knows it's your first time; if you're puffing and red they'll presume you're several miles into a long run and be impressed; put your headphone in, your music up and smile at people. They'll be glad it's you and not them and other runners will nod and smile back. No-one has ever laughed!
That's true! Thank you, this has made me feel a lot better

This is what other people are thinking when they see you running:
"I should be doing something like that to get a bit fitter: I wish I had the same confidence as that person."
I'll definitely be thinking of this when I go for a run, thanks so much, this has really cheered me up!

I can imagine those canals might be quite busy with other runners of all levels - you'll seem perfectly normal.
