I’m 61 & about to get started. Any tips please
About to get started : I’m 61 & about to get... - Couch to 5K
About to get started
Take it slowly to start with! I’m 60 this year and haven’t run for a long time. I started by running too far and too fast and started to develop shin splints. If you stick to the couch to 5k you should be fine, and just start running with a gentle jog. Don’t be tempted to do too much.
I’m 61 and just finished week 3, keep it slow my first run I went off too fast and thought my lungs were going to burst, now finding it easier, take a day off in between more if you feel you haven’t recovered, enjoy I look forward to running now and so does my trusty dog.
Hello, just go slow and follow the plan always take the rest days and come here and let us know how you get on 😊
I'd never run before and found I got sore shins. I watched several youtube videos on technique and I found that really useful. Keeping your body upright, looking straight ahead, raising my knee higher rather than shuffling - things like that - simple, but effective. No pain since I changed my technique. A bum bag is a good idea - you can put your keys and your phone in it. Good music is essential for me. Good luck
Welcome to the forum.

Enjoy your journey.
Hi and well done for embarking on the programme! I’m the same age as you and currently on week 6 run 2 but have had to back off a few days due to sore toes! My tips to you - take it easy, go slow, enjoy being outside and buy some good running trainers. I am really enjoying the challenge and wish I’d done this earlier. Look forward to hearing about your progress.
What trainers would you suggest
I would advise you to go and have gait analysis in a running shop.
Google gait analysis near me.
They will advise you on the best pair for you.😊
Great that you have started, go slowly take your rest days. Enjoy it.
Hi Anne
Definitely go to a good running shop and have the gait analysis done. My trainers cost less than some ‘fashion trainers’ I’d bought for casual wear.
Hope it’s going well!
I too started at 60, the best thing I’ve ever done.
When you first start c25k you can use comfortable shoes/trainers you may already have at home but once you get to running the longer distances of week 4 you should go to a good running shop and be fitted after gait analysis. It is well worth it as good fitting shoes will reduce chances of injury.
Have fun.
I'm 61 and started very gently on 27 December and graduated last week and did a Park Run....who me??? Yes you can do this, go at your own pace, it's only a competition with yourself, Noone else! Good Luck.
I’m 65 (no, I don’t think I look it either!) and I’m just in week 2. My advice would be decent trainers from a running shop, a supportive bra, take it really really slow and enjoy it!
I’m 61 too I struggle sometimes but just follow the rules and you will be fine I am hoping to finish this time had to have a break due to chest infection but I’m back on it this is my third attempt hopefully I will finish god willing
