Giving it a good go, on top of rugby

So I started the couch to 5k on Sunday at the gym as I live in a village where there are not many safe places to run. The roads are bendy, the grass is marshy and there is no park, so the gym it was.

The decision to start was driven by 2 women in the team I started playing for. One graduated (YES FOR HER!) and the other is wk4 (go girl!). And I was surprised. Honestly I was really dreading the whole running thing, but being a number 8 means I need to up my game a bit, and that starts with the running.

So the run itself is not bad. I was surprised at how easy it felt. the treadmill was at 1% and the walk and run taught me about breathing, and that it is ok to sweat like a pig. So yay me.

So here is the big debate in my head. I will be training tonight, but I am also overdue my second run. Secondly I have a match on Friday so may fall behind. So do I do my run as part of an extended warm up tonight, or see how I feel tomorrow with the possibility if it is ruck and tackle training that I will be sore and bruised....hhhmmmm I will be debating this one right up until 6pm.

On a brighter note, just seen 2 more people on my facebook feed that have taken this up, so go us!

Welcome... well done getting started. If there’s not going to be much running in the session tonight (forwards run more than they used to I think) then I’d go for it before the session and rest tomorrow all smug!

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

The golden rule is to listen to your body, but err on the side of caution. It is easy to underestimate the effects of the impact of running, so take rest days from impact exercise and you will not lose any significant condition if you have extra rest days between runs.

Enjoy your journey.

Excuse my ignorance - what does a number 8 do in a rugby team ? I’m sure loads of folk are dying to know but they’re all too shy to ask 😄

Sorry for the late reply guys, last night turned into a mega session. The number 8 sits at the back of the scrum, being the size I am, my coach just wants me to pick up the ball and "smash as many players as you can".... my idea of fun after a long week.

8 pushes in the scrum, they can feel what is happening and can guide the pack on what to do. Traditionally, this is where the ball ends up in a scrum. I am also the first person in a line out so eventually may be lifting someone. This is a little more unusual as it tends to be a prop (front row scrum)

And.... did not run. As soon as I saw what the coach set up, I knew I would be too knackered so going to do it tonight whilst my son trains, followed by a rest day and match friday.

Makes sense. You’re the one who has to think quickly and be able to turn around fast then ! Hope the run goes well. Enjoy your well earned rest. Thanks for the info x
