Hello! I am new here, just joined! I was recently diagnosed with moderate to severe OA in the hips / my left one is the one that aches all of the time, but I am not immobile, I move around just fine, but ache more.
Is anyone here with the same situation as me perhaps? And if so, do you still run? I love this Couch to 5K and have used it before to get back to running, it is a great motivator. I am thinking maybe I just start it again and modify it if needed. I won't be running again like I use to...but maybe this will still help?! Would love to hear from anyone whether you are similar to my case or something else you are dealing with and still run the C25K! Thanks

Welcome dmsosa ! Like you I’m not an obvious runner - in my case I’m carrying an extra person’s weight in fat (which I call Ethel !) I’m finding C25k brilliant because the emphasis is on getting fit, not speed. You are positively encouraged to take your time and slow down if you need. You can repeat every run if you need, and the forum is friendly and helpful. I couldn’t even think of running when I started; now I’m on my fifth repeat of week 1 and I can jog a quarter of each run. Nobody minds that I might reach 5k in a year or so ! So go for it at your own pace, and enjoy !
Quite a few folk on here have similar issues... if you have the okay from your GP..then there is a chance you can do this... There is some good advice here.... but it does depend on your medical prognosis from your GP.
I’ve got moderate OA. Diagnosed 3 years ago when I was in constant discomfort and pain. I was finding it more and more difficult to walk and was down to about 40 minutes max. I really thought that I was headed for the couch full time.
I saw a physiotherapist and started doing the exercises she gave me. Everyday and whenever I had a spare moment I was doing these exercises. The physio said that there are muscles in your buttocks which switch off if you’re sedentary and have OA in the hips and these need particular exercises to make them work again.
Anyway I’m now 70 years old and I’ve just completed the C25K program. I can “run” for 30 minutes on the treadmill with no problem. I think it might be a bit more difficult on the hard road. And I now have ‘buns of steel ‘ would you believe. Sorry if that’s TMI for any young folks out there.
So I would really recommend seeing a physiotherapist and making sure you have the muscular strength to support your hips and then get running.
I saw a PT maybe a week ago, we are working on my core...she showed me how to activate the transverse abdominis and said working my flutes will help a lot. I have lower back pain and problems as well...I will focus on that the glutes and hope it can alleviate back pain and some hip pain. This is good to know and I’m happy it helped you...I’m trying to stay positive and hope this will indeed help. At the moment knowing I won’t be running makes me really sad.
