Yes. No smokes or alcohol. Red meat or salt. Or anything remotely good tasting. You must drink loads of water and if the flare up is not going away the doc will give you anti inflammatory pills. Oh, and you cannot run with gout. How do you know it’s gout? That stuff hurts madly btw.

As I've got a diagnosis from the doctor 😂

And they didn’t give you detailed dietary explanation and prescribed the right medication? I change doctors for less.

This has just reminded me of how we’ve advanced... the cure for gout used to be to become poor.

That used to the main remedy for majority of cancers too..

I saw a fantastic episode of channel 4's food hospital. The dietician recommended lots of tofu and sorted the chap right out. Lots of fluid and no red meat. Try you tube it might be on there!!

Thanks Jo Jo , I'll have to do a you tube search x

Get well soon Terry. Not belittling your condition but my sympathy for you went up tenfold when eating tofu was mentioned there. Hope to see you back soon.

Sure I'll be back on it in next few days two weeks off work from this evening, plenty of time to recovery

Hopefully I’ll be joining you there... time to see if this non runner has runners knee!

I thought that too in the episode! 🤣🤣 but actually they made it look pretty appetizing! I've had it on Thai food where its been very tasty and somehow looked like thick omelette chunks. I'm sure if I tried to cook it I would end up with just a wobbly mass!! 🤣🤣🤣

Been veggie since I was 14, tried to get flavour in the stuff but whatever I do it reminds me of chewing a rubber.

Eraser, I hasten to add.

🤣🤣🤣 brilliant!! I used to like chewing erasers as a kid 🤣🤣🤣

UnfitNoMore profile image

Well, you should try cooking tofu then 🤪

Tofu can be fabulous. I use huge amounts of the smoked version of Tofoo in all sorts of dishes, air-fried, or just mixed into salads.

I crumble the plain Tofoo into unsweetened soya yogurt with a bit of salt and chopped spring onions to make a wonderfully creamy and flavourful cottage cheese alternative that has huge amounts of protein.

The Taifun smoked tofu with almonds is to die for. I eat slices of it straight out of the pack.

I’m more than willing to have someone pop over here and prove me wrong! I know it must be possible, I just can’t do it. I was in the same position with okra for years 😂

Okra! Eeeeugh! That truly is food from hell.

GoGo_JoJo profile image

I like okra at Indian restaurants... I'd never contemplate cooking it at home... wouldn't know where to start 🤣🤣

Lots of the correct fluids, and a suitable diet. Hopefully the doctor has given you something for the inflammation. Some people feel cherry juice or cherries can help reduce the episode. Here is a good website.

nhs.uk/conditions/gout/

I hope it clears soon.

in reply to Millsie-J

My brother gets gout quite a bit, it seems excruciating. I have heard about cherry juice, too, through him.

I wonder if it comes in a pill form, like cranberry does now (which people take for a UTI) for those who can't stand drinking that much juice.

It’s absolutely agonising, l suffered for years and then, guess what, the damn thing vanished the second l quit smoking and red wine and took up running. Hmm, l wonder if there’s a link. ;)

My 19 year old daughter suffered really badly. Had to use crutches or a wheelchair when at Uni. Not good for a 19yr old beautiful girl! Her’s wasnt smoking or red wine. It was other medication and an underlying health issue. We are all different and are not medics so can only draw on our own experience.

Absolutely agree. I know some people whose gout had nothing to do with my causes, but mine simply vanished with lifestyle change. I wish all was that simple...

Terryb4u profile image
Terryb4u in reply to

Yes it does come in pill form

Terry good morning! My hubby suffers from gout occasionally and he drinks cherry juice it has to be cherry juice. Also he takes cherry tablets from Holland and Barrett. However a glass of cherry juice does the trick!🍒.Drink a glass every morning until it clears up.

Gout is a build up of Uric acid and will indeed be very incapacitating,so no running for you!but you must still try and exercises ie gentle walking.Plenty of fluids ie water.

Hope this helps.😀😀

Hi Peggy thanks for the advice, I've got some cherry extract pills now and I've read turmeric, and celery seed extract are great for it, so I've got all three lol, didn't see the cherry juice though I'll have to have another look xx

Hi Terry. Morrison’s sell it but the better quality, more concentrated you will find at any health food shops. Hope this helps.👍😀😀

Terryb4u profile image

Seems the pills are working the swelling has already slightly gone down😂, could I actually be getting better and I maybe able to run some time soon 😱

The cherry breaks down the uric crystals which in turn reduces the pain swelling and inflammation. So it sounds like it’s starting to work! Good luck.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Terryb4u

Apparently.. something that really does exist..one of our runners on here has experience of it.. causing major issues in the knees... and hydration plays an important part in it apparently!

I do know that the runner was advised to up the hydration levels... :) It may be of help to you...There is a significant amount of reliable information on it online... and apparently quite common with runners..in toes... and ankles too... Called Pseudo gout because it resembles Gout:)

A special low-purine diet and the use of diuretics are recommended, which accelerate the excretion of uric acid. The use of diuretics should, however, be consulted with your doctor first, because when the cause of kidney disease is the kidney disease, additional diuretics will not always be a good solution. Nettle, field horsetail, birch leaf or angelica are the best. In the unconventional treatment of gout, it is also possible to use preparations from poplar buds as well as flower and leaf buds of ash.

Treatment of gout with a home-made method should be based on:

weight loss, especially in people who are overweight or obese,

eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables,

using a low-purine diet, limiting meat, giblets, game, broth, seafood, asparagus, beans, spinach, mushrooms or peas, cocoa, black coffee and tea, fatty sauces,

reducing the intervals between meals and the volume of meals,

avoiding alcohol,

giving up smoking,

providing the body with at least 3 liters of fluid a day,

regular, moderate physical activity.

Gout can also be treated naturally, especially in the interictal period. In the treatment of gout, lemon juice is used to cleanse the body. Patients with gout should daily drink on an empty stomach the juice squeezed out of 1 lemon, mixed with water and sweetened with honey. Treatment of gout with lemon juice should be used together with conventional treatment. In addition to lemon juice, you can also drink cucumber juice, which works diuretic and accelerates the excretion of uric acid from the body.

Gout is also treated with herbs. They are recommended both in alleviating acute attacks and eliminating the risk of further seizures. Treatment with gout herbs has no side effects. Herbs can be bought at a pharmacy or herbal store and brewed according to the recipe on the packaging. They may be in the form of dried fruit, extracts or rubbing gels. They have a diuretic effect, stimulate metabolism and gently painkillers. Some herbs, such as nettle, have a deacidifying and detoxifying effect.

My husband takes omega 3 fish oil for his gout, (it helps him)someone recommended it on here actually!! His Dr said that there’s no one solution to preventing episodes as it’s completely different to each person (the dr’s gout was brought on by fizzy drinks??) He suggested keeping a food diary and note when attacks happen to see if there’s a food/drink link.

Good luck and hopefully you’ll be pain free asap 👍🏻

Terryb4u profile image
Terryb4u in reply to Catbee

Didn't think you could take omega 3 fish oil cat, but I'll give that a go, and as for the fizzy drinks you can have them as long as they have not sugars with the ending in "ose" in, but thank you for your help 👍

Catbee profile image
CatbeeGraduate in reply to Terryb4u

No worries!! Not sure I’ve helped any! Both my brothers suffer with it too and neither of them are affected by red meat/red wine, I guess that’s an old school myth? Good luck 👍🏻

Terryb4u profile image
Terryb4u in reply to Catbee

I agree about the red wine or red meat think it is myself, but the food diary I think will be a great idea 👍

Gout I use to suffer from this alot, it is really painful so you have my sympathy. What reduced it for me was pure cherry juice it's not the greatest drink but it helped reduce the pain. But since I took up running 4years ago I haven't had an attack since, which I hope will encourage you.

Terryb4u profile image
Terryb4u in reply to benwill

That's the problem lol I can't run as I'm suffering, let's hope this bout his son so I can start over again 👍
