Starting again

I have run all my life, no greater distance than 10 miles, but with a job change and achilles problems I have turned into a couch potato. I am starting from scratch and found couch to 5K, which I must say is keeping me motivated to complete. I want to move on to Bridge to 10K once I have completed this one.

Good for you! I used to run a lot when I was in my twenties when jogging was all the rage, but kids & job soon put paid to that. This programme really does work, and you don't have to worry about pace or distance. It's just time spent running and you can plod along at whatever speed you want. Good luck!

Welcome back to running. Trust the plans and that 10k is only a few months away.

I started the Couch to 5K course again around 7 weeks and am closing on completion now.

I first did the course around this time last year, but then had a nasty fall just after completing the course and had a really long long layoff for most of the year which meant I had to start again from scratch, too.

My only slight criticism of the course - and this surprises me rather than annoys me - is why there’s a sudden leap around Week 6 from 2 x 10 min runs to a single 25 minute run. This seems like a sudden lengthening on time - and distance - to me, though I managed it pretty comfortably tonight, and I can only think the reason is that they reckon if you can run non stop for 10 minutes then any possible problems we might have are mental rather than physical and the battle for our stamina has been won with a new battle beginning now to:develop the ability to endure.

What would your take be on this?
