Seriously toying with doing our local park run this weekend ..

How do you make it work with the app? I religiously do my 5 minute warm up walk and then start running ... we will feel daft walking amongst all the runners for the first 5 mins!! Any tips welcomed. It will be our last run of week 8

Walk for 5 minutes before the start. Once you are warmed up, you are warmed up. Your muscles will not suddenly 'go cold' if you have to wait a minute or two before the off, and you can always jig about a bit if you are really worried.

I walked the first 5 minutes when I did one. (That was about the only bit I got right!)

Alternatively, turn up early enough to walk for five minutes and then “mill about” at the edge of the people lining up at the start so you can move about until the off.

Take it steady at the start regardless. Some will have twice your speed or more.

I was on Week 7 run 1 when I did my first parkrun. I did the run exactly as scheduled - 5 min warm up walk, ran for 25 mins then walked the rest. I did run across the finish line though :-)

Lots of parkruns have people that walk the whole course so you may find yourself at the back with them. There is a tail walker anyway so the worst that will happen is you will end up walking alongside them. I found that when I started running I overtook quite a few people who had either gone off way too fast or who were doing run/walk intervals.

It is really good fun and very inclusive - everyone is very supportive of each other.

Good Luck and Enjoy :-)

Yeah, I do Park run, and I’ve been walking the first 5 mins of the event proper and overtaking people on the way round when they have to walk. But it is hard not setting off with everyone else at a jog. So if you think you might be tempted to run too early I would do the walk warm up before the set off. There is normally a talky bit at the start announcing people doing a milestone run, clubs that day and Parkrun tourists. Depending on the run director and the number of runners this can take a couple of minutes, up to 10 or 15 mins (when it was the NHS 70 yr celebration run). There are usually pace runners wearing tabbards, who can help you directly if you ask them or you can informally keep an eye on. I really love the atmosphere and the enthusiasm for everyone else that is there. It’s very uplifting so enjoy it, smile and spread the positivity!

Thanks all. I think, unless it’s really hot Saturday morning, we will be brave and give it a go! At least I will have my 12 yo running buddy with me for support!! We won’t manage to run the whole thing but we can do our 28 mins and see what happens!!

As others have said do your 5 minutes walk before the start, then off you go. I did my first Parkrun plugged into run3 of wk 9. Once I’d done the 30 mins non stop I just took it easy, walked a bit, ran a bit and completed the 5K in just under 40 mins - and was truly delighted.

So go do it and enjoy. Don’t forget to register for the Parkrun and get your barcode, very important.
