First outing for the new shorts. Photo attached after complaints yesterday π€£
This is the first time Iβve run without Lycra undershorts as the new shorts have a mesh lining (as found in menβs swim shorts). Wow. What a difference. So much more breezy.
This is the first run where Iβve set out to do 5k - last time happened by accident because a 40 minute run was so close to 5k that I carried on.
So this is the first time I walked 5 mins then ran 2.5k away from my house. No Toxic 10 today, gremlins manageable.
I rounded the bend that is usually in the final few metres of my 4k run and I had this weird sensation, like a piece of elastic around my waist and attached to my house was reaching its limit.
I just kept wanting to turn back and I spent a full 0.5k checking my watch, half going forward, half leaning backward, feeling a bit confused and lost. I reached the point where I had mapped the 2.5k to be and it wasnβt. More confusion.
Finally the half way ping happened. I rewarded myself with an emergency Haribo and turned for home.
Running back was much harder than usual. My legs were at familiar parts of my route but they had done a full km more by the time I was there. Sirens Hill is always a struggle - especially as it ends with a really long false-flat - but today I was finding it harder.
Right leg started playing up a little. Calf niggly, thigh near the knee making itself known. Apart from that felt like I could run on and on.
My time was 44 mins dead, 45 seconds slower than last time. That was slightly disappointing but I think the confusion thing nearing halfway had a lot to do with it. Iβm certainly not unhappy - that is only my second ever 5k and I will trade fast times for avoiding toxic 10 and gremlins every time.
A lot has been written over the past week about the support of this forum and the virtual friendships formed among us all sharing this challenge and succeeding together. I know I wouldnβt have made it this far without that support. You are a special bunch.
Whatever run you have next, enjoy it x

Nah. A blade has never come near them. Nearly had a nasty accident once when I had sunburnt legs and confused the Veet for aftersun. Fortunately the smell saved me.
Great pikkie... maybe a tad too much info' about it being breezy!!!
Very well done... a good run ... ( don't be disappointed though with timings).
You are still a newish Graduate... and you are doing wonderfully... One of the best things you can do is just to run out and leave all your tech behind... except your watch...just run, let the legs find their happy pace and run until you feel you want to stop
π€£π€£π€£ I hear you. I think Iβm still a bit terrified of overdoing it, as Iβm still too porky, or under doing it and slipping back towards the couch.
Loving the shorts. Donβt be disappointed with your time. Every run moves you forward in one way or another, even if not in terms of speed. You are doing brilliantly and your posts are always great ππ
Cheers! I discovered (after removing them) that the shorts have two large mesh panels down the sides. Everything discrete and hidden and all but itβs no wonder they are so cooling.
They are perfect summer shorts. And, with my usual Lycra under them, they will be good for winter as they are reflective. Happy shopper.
Woohoo look at those legs!! I had my extra long legs out today too - too hot to be self conscious. Great run Jay!! You are doing brilliantly. πͺπΌπͺπΌπ
Oh well done on your deliberate 5k! Love the shorts (and legs! And smart trainers!) and the breezy element must be gratifying (?) in the heat. So pleased you didn't fall by the wayside in a molten puddle! You are running so well, great time, great run, inspiring mate π
Ahem, the *frozen* lycra undershorts. Research stalled before it even got off the ground! π Gutted. You were my only hope lol.
Yeah I've thrown all self consciousness out the window. Shorts n vest the only way to survive. I don't know how others do it either, although ultimately it has to be what you are comfy in and what you get used to.
I totally agree about preferring a slower time to fighting the toxic 10 and gremlins, especially in this heat. I did my 6k with that in mind on Thursday, so slow but loved it.
Iβve been thinking about getting some running shorts for a while but now Iβm definitely going to get some! π
I run (...ran and will run again) in shorts. Dreadful sight but itβs my Christian duty to make the rest of the world feel good about themselves when they saw this old heifer blubbering along πππ
Well done Jay, and the shorts (and legs) look fabulous! I was inspired today to go out an buy shorts and a hat. Mine won't be breezy sadly as have built in lycra undershorts. Couldn't risk chafing with a loose design I'm afraid. They have a very pink pattern on (bordering on unicorns) so don't think I'll be winning any fashion contests but they will match my very pink trainers π Happy running x
Well done jay ...Fab 5 k ..You are doing brilliant ...I feel I'm so far behind everyone now ...No consolidation runs yet ...Love the shorts btw ..What's this about freezing items lol π
Great post and great run. Relatable description of that piece of elastic attaching you to your starting point! I've definitely got one of those. Gotta let it out a bit longer from now on!
Oh, and great shorts / legs! Though I think enough people have told you that already
