I'm a fifty year old male newbie who has always HATED running

I have been on a health kick for the last couple of years as I realised that my partner was always looking at my belly and saying that I should eat less rubbish. Started with Beachbody (PIYO, T25 and Insanity Max 30). I got stronger and fitter but was still overweight and had a belly. I incorporated weight training, cycling and a bit of rowing then found the answer to my weight loss with a combination of Kettlebell training, skipping and Intermittent Fasting. This worked wonders and I started feeling (and looking) fit and healthy.

Next, I had been jumping rope for about a year, watching tutorials on YouTube; a lot of which were linked to boxing training so I decided to scratch an itch. Boxing training! I boxed a little as a teenager and always loved the fitness and technique work. So I luckily found a local club that catered for oldies. One day, they cruelly decided to take us on a road run and I found my fitness Achilles heel...running. So I have decided to commit to Couch 2 5K in order to run for at least 30 minutes. What is good is that I am already fit so it's going to be a case of conditioning my body to running and increasing my stamina. I am at the end of week 1 and looking forward to the process. Giddyup!

Good post from you 'kwamelong', interesting history you have but things are getting better for you, I hope you enjoy the C25K training program, interesting what you say about boxing, that is quite a physical sport, good exercise for you as well. My final day of C25K is on Monday, I have enjoyed this running journey, I am sure you will do so as well. Interesting what people here on C25K do on their rest days. I noticed a pair of 5k kettlebells at Tesco about 6 months ago when I was doing my weekly shopping, on impulse I bought them there and then, they were a dead weight coming home as I also had all my other messages and groceries with me including a 2 litre bottle of I think it was orange, I thought my message bag was going to burst. Since then I do exercises with them, they say that gives you core strength for running, perhaps it does help, I also do planks, some yoga, push and sit ups etc, I have been a cyclist for 40 years or so. All those other activities perhaps have helped me through this training program, I have kept rigidly 100% to the program and have had no injuries or had to miss any days off.

9 weeks ago I did my first run and thought 30 minutes would never happen. Today I finished the course.

It's a amazing program that actually works, I even enjoy running

Wow! Well done for maintaining your mission for health for so long - so pleased for you that exercise is a habit. You’ll definitely notice the boxing fitness improve as you go through the C25k programme - If my experience is anything to go by (I do swimming on non-run days: breathing is loads easier now). Good luck on your runs!

Welcome to the forum.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and full of tips.

Please be aware that fitness in one area does not transfer immediately to another discipline. Running, I suppose to a degree like skipping, is an impact exercise, which actually creates micro tears in your muscles which repair and strengthen on your rest days, not while running. So the rest days are sacresanct, but you have plenty of other non impact stuff to keep you going on those days.

Enjoy your journey.
