Doin' the urban shuffle

2 x 8 minutes runs

Was hiking to the park over hill and dale (read: through malls, stations, stairs, stairs and more stairs, over the motorway and then more stairs) when I paused at an underground taxi drop-off point. It was 6.00am and it was fairly quiet. A long stretch (maybe 100 metres?) of wide, smooth sidewalk was before me. The warm up 5 minutes was over and I had paused the app til I was ready to run. Hmm, I could do 8 minutes here! Saves clambering all the way to the park. So I trotted back and forth for 8 minutes, elegantly leaping over travellers' luggage and skirting around tour groups from China. In the darkness of the underground road, I was way overdressed in my sunglasses and cap, and a little underdressed in my new (short!) (chaf-less!) running shorts and looked a complete fool. But, whatever. I wasn't melting in the sun so I just did not care. I was a happy little mushroom in the dark. πŸ„πŸ„

Walked back into the cool mall for the 5 minute walk then outside (proper outside, out-out [well, hello Micky!]) for the next 8 minute run. There's a large public area with lots of restaurants, garden, and general paths, so I decided this was the place for the second run. Only a few other joggers around at this hour. It was 28 degrees, but being in the shade meant it felt I wasn't running underwater. I kept to my slow pace to see how I'd go, and ended up running a cheeky 10 minutes. Just because it was so freakin good to be out of the sun!

Did the warm down walk then it was a quick 5 minutes back to the apartment. And now I feel ... weird. Like I cheated. Like I didn't try. I'm so used to coming back from a run absolutely shattered from the heat that that kinda makes me feel I've done the work for that particular run. It feels wrong that I still have energy and will be able to do the things I need to do today without dragging my feet.

But then I think maybe this is how it's meant to be. As in, not half dead after a few shuffles about. I'll see how the new route works out. It's a bit strange not having the long path along the harbour that I'm used to. There were a lot of turns and gradients (superior designing... not), and stairs and buildings to run up and around today but this could work. I may just survive running outside, after all.

Until the monsoon rains come... Then I'll be back to the underground taxi rank to greet the Chinese tour groups as I shuffle past. πŸ‘‹

Absolutely loved this! And then loved it some more. Well done you trooper!! Sounds too hot for me and littered with opportunities to fall over stuff. But you nailed it hon. Just like we Knew you would.

To paraphrase The Chemical Brothers - "Superstar Dee hey".

A truly lovely story, packed with fun, suspense, suitcases and a happy ending.

You got done this right girl!

Phew, so pleased to report I won't need sallenson QC and partners to bail me out of the brig. Nor do I need to dig a tunnel! Thanks for your kind words, and those of the Chemical Brothers. I'm in awe rmthat you managed to read the entire posy. I'll write a short one one of these days and not mention the weather. Challenge on.

Let me loose in Antarctica and that ultra runner will be happy to appear. In the meantime, I'll be happy to make the 20 min shuffle on Saturday! πŸ’ƒπŸ˜ƒ

Must be such a relief to finally get a buzz from the actual achievement and enjoyment of running without feeling you’re about to expire. My run today was in 12 degree heat, phew! cold southerly even got passed by a lady with a walking stick, total shame of it! am now sitting as near to the woodburner as possible. When you get to that podium I will celebrate with a nice vino from The Barossa. Did a wine tour in Adelaide some years back but was so hungover from the night before drank Coke instead. I have learnt from that and never touch the stuff anymore.(Coke I mean) anyway enough of moi. Have a good rest and run 3 go, go, go CheersπŸ₯‚

Lol lexi6 no shame in being passed by anyone! You're out there doing it, and in 12 degrees. Arctic, I tells ya! I'd be totally layered up like the Michelin man. Who can run with all that gear on, anyway?

Bloody shame you didn't enjoy the full Barossa experience. Very good wine from that region. Cheers to you!

He he entirely my own fault, Overnight (party train from Melbourne) I’ve made up for it since and love Oz wine, the hubby reckons Australian Syrah is the best. I reckon if people on this forum run through snow, hail etc I aint gonna complain, just gotta woman up!

Great post Dee

Glad you made it without self combusting in the heat. Hats off!

#you can do it you little mushroom!

Thanks, Matt! And congrats for reading the stupidly long post. I don't know what i was thinking.

I may yet be but a puddle on the tarmac; time will tell. But yes, #I can do it :D

That is a great post. Very entertaining.

You managed your run well. If you went at the same sort of pacecas normal, you don't need to feel guilty if you have energy to spare. I did a run later than normal tonight and found I performed better in the cooler temperatures.

It sounds like you're adapting well.

Good luck with run 3.

Yep, same pace as other runs. Made a world of difference not doing it in the sun. Lesson learned. :D

I missed this post yesterday, and you've changed your picture. That sounds like a much better run for you, you are clearly getting fitter if you are sneaking in an extra couple of minutes.

Looking forward to your next post 🀩

Yes I am now a pineapple in a swimming pool. πŸ™„

Hopefully getting fitter, but also soooo much easier in the shade. 20 mins tomorrow ! πŸ‘
