Hi I'm heading for the first 20min run tomorrow and just wondered what you all do re eating and drinking, do you have a little to eat earlier or nothing till afterwards ? I never seem to have much energy before I go and sometimes I really struggle

I eat and wait about 1-1.5 hours; problem is I’m then hungry again after a run so eat again, no wonder there’s no weight loss for me! Good luck 😉

I have porridge for breakfast, made with water. I run an hour to 90 mins after that.

If you just want a snack as you’re hungry make it something easily digested My fave is a slice of white bread toast with peanut butter.

Ok white toast 😃

Do they even still make that?

I make it 🙂 white, wholemeal, granary, spelt, rye, oat. I like bread 🙂. It’s a good surface for peanut butter or guacamole 😋

have you tried using sprouted grain flour?

No, not yet I keep looking for it. Sainsbury has it in some stores but not seen it in ours, but it’s a fiver a 500g bag

I didn’t want to have to start sprouting my own but I’ve not ruled it out. We used to have a flour guy here but he sold out to a Cotswold flour company, sadly Getting flour mail order is costly cos of the delivery charge. I do sourdough and that takes time. This stuff can take over your life 🙂

I made bread this afternoon, half white and half stoneground wholemeal 😋.

It is awfully hard to find and awfully expensive yes. Although buying the sprouted bread is stupidly expensive too. Ezekiel bread is about £5/ loaf.

Hmm, perhaps a gap in the market there...

Sprouting things can be fraught as they seem to pick up bugs while they’re hanging about. Mind you the bread gets cooked but it makes me wary 🙂. My neice got raging infection with home-sprouted alfalfa or sommat. I warned her but kids ey 👀🙄

I could grow spelt but then you have to buy a grinder 😃 Hugh feebly worsts it used an electric one with good results 🤔🤓

I got some sprouted spelt bread from marks. Going to try it for lunch🥗

I have a banana about an hour before a run. I normally run in the mornings.

If I go in the morning I just have some water before I go. Otherwise I go 1.5+ hours after a meal, or a little while after a snack. Make sure you’re well hydrated on running and non running days and you should be fine to go without while you run and just have some water when you get home.

I usually run first thing in the morning. I don't eat or drink anything. I think I must be at one extreme of a spectrum. It takes a while to figure out what works in individual cases so don't be disheartened if at first you are doing Practice runs ☺

Wishing you a great twenty tomorrow ☺

Running for just twenty minutes does not require any dietary specialism. Once you get into 10k and longer runs then you need to start thinking about food and water intake

in reply toDuddles

That's good to know , now I know I will never run 10k , mind I not got to 5k yet 😂

cup of t (or 2) before a morning run

Breakfast is a lovely treat when you get back hungry and feeling virtuous :)

If you read the guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5... it explains that if you have a good broad based healthy diet, then there is no need to change it and certainly no need to eat extra to do C25K.

I do it first thing (but i’m not an early riser!) before breakfast. I have a couple of cups of tea in bed to wake me up though...and then a swig of water before i set off.

I felt the unpleasantness of running after a meal (it was my first time, I didn't know!) and have planned runs to be at least an hour after eating a light meal since.

BUT a couple of times when I couldn't plan I was staaaarving and it felt like it would be unwise to run on such low energy, so those times I had a boiled egg and a glass of water and went out about 10 mins after it. I haven't experienced any issues with that yet. ❤️️☀️
