Lumpy pavement = trail shoes??!

Please tell me this means I can put trail shoes on my Christmas list?!!! I reeeeally fancy a pair .....but don't have an actual reason.... I know they aren't for pavements but does it count if I run on the grass instead? I was actually thinking of doing that in winter when the path gets icy (and the grass gets.....slippy?!).

I run and power walk everywhere in trail shoes!

Good to know that's one tick on my 'to get' list then! :)

OH yes, definitely put trail shoes on your list! (Although I waited till the January sales to get mine this year😉)

Great idea! Love a bargain, I'll research now to be ready! :)

Trail shoes are not designed for tarmac, but of course get on the grass and the trails, the beaches, cliffs, hills, forests, mountains and moors......have shoes will travel.

Yes, I think I will practice on grass until I am brave enough to do everything you've just listed there! Just the thought of it makes me happy! :)

As far as I am concerned, that list is what running is all about.

I am inclined to agree... I can't think of anything better!

Remember trail shoes are all neutral support. If you are on trails, moors, hills etc on uneven ground, the ground being uneven means you will move you feet and not pound away constantly on the same area of the foot. Hence neutral support in the shoe.

You may get away with it if you routinely wear neutral running shoes but i dont know what the tread is like on tarmac. You would need to check.

Thanks that is good to know. I am neutral which is very handy!! Phew! I'm hoping that if I get a pair it will encourage me to get off the pavement and go off road a bit and get into nature more. Not too rugged though, I'm not that nimble! :)

I don't think mine would be so good on that even though I was told they are a hybrid so good for pavements and grass.

They are great in the mud, so I am not slipping much, but a bit "clicky" on tarmac. They are safe enough but my other shoes are better (and quieter) with their Continental tyre soles.

I was looking at hybrids too as they are a safer bet - so I thought anyway! But I have read on here about the clickiness (?!?) and that they get shredded on pavements. I suppose one shoe doesn't cover all!

I only wear mine at my local parkrun, which is muddy!

They’re on my Christmas list too as I’ve stupidly entered a trail Half Marathon in February 🤦🏼‍♀️. The trouble is, I’ll need to get used to running in them first and I’m mainly only running on pavements now with it being so dark by the time I get home. Hadn’t thought this through at all when I paid that blasted entry fee...!

Oh my - good luck! Sounds great fun though (if 13 miles of running can ever be fun!!) I'll look forward to your post on that! :)

There will no doubt be accompanying pics of me covered head to toe in mud, not necessarily at the finish line as I’m not sure I’ll make it that far...😂

Yes you will and grinning from ear to ear! Hope you've roped someone else in to support you. :)

I run in a sort of all terrain shoe as my runs are part tarmac and part gravel / grot. For tarmac though, they do feel a bit greasy underfoot when it gets damp, because the knobblier tread pattern doesn't have as much surface area contact with the road. They are my first pair of trainers, so I reckon as a starter they've been fine.

Thanks for the info I did wonder what they'd be like to run in on tarmac as you can't avoid it all the time. Some further consideration needed I feel!!

I have just one pair of shoes (Asics trail). I have used them on mixed terrain - from pavements, forest tracks, grassy footpaths and a pebble beach (sometimes all in one run!). I have even used them for a 13k road race with no problems. I love them!

That's great to hear, my normal trainers are Asics and they are so comfortable. I had seen some Asics trails and they didn't look much different so it's good to know they can cope everything you are doing - impressive by the way! 13k!! :) I like the sound of them

Those leaves look a bit gnarly ... yep trail shoes :-)

Haha! That's what I thought! What with the lumpy pavement and all, better to be safe than sorry! :)

In which case you need to get out in the woods or parks and have an adventure when you get them.... pavements are not for trail runners ⛔️

Fishypieface profile image
FishypiefaceGraduate in reply toju-ju-

I'm hoping it will encourage me to do that :) as I really fancy being a bit more off road. I'm not quite brave enough yet (issues!!) but buying trail shoes might encourage me to take the plunge off the pavement and into the wild! Fingers crossed...

It’s the best- just take the plunge!
