Knee and ankle pain

Hi, I have just done my 4th week of a Local Authority C25K (2 sessions per week). We are up to 4 min runs with 1.5 min recovery walk in between. Up until approx 3 years ago I had exercised regularly and would run for 30 mins no problem. In the past 3 years I have done virtually nothing though. Joined a gym a couple of months ago for swimming and I have done some X-trainer and bike work.

However, during the past 2 weeks C25K sessions, I have been getting pain in my knees just below the kneecap and the front of my ankles whilst running and this seems to be getting worse rather then improving. My ankles especially seem really stiff whilst running. I have never had this pain in all the previous years of exercise.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how has it improved? Do I just need to invest in some new trainers or are age and weight against me (I'm 48 and weigh more than I have ever weighed in my life - currently crept into size 14 clothes!)

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond!

48 and size 14 shouldn't be a barrier. Week 4 was the point I got gait analysis and new running shoes. They were so comfy. Well worth it.

Others may be able to suggest the cause but aches are to be expected, pain means rest and get professional advice if it doesn't go away or keeps coming back. Stretching is important as is not going too fast which might be hard if you are running with a group.

Hope it clears up soon.
