Possible shin splints advice needed please...

Hi,

I am looking for some tips regarding possible shin splints. 3 weeks ago I had made it up to week 7 and completed 2 of the 25 minute runs without any problem. The next run really hurt and I only managed 18 minutes. It felt like someone had their hands around my shin and calf and was squeezing really tightly all the way around. My legs felt like lead.

I hoped it was a one off but the next 2 attempts I only managed 16 mins and 14 mins because of the pain. I have not run for two weeks in the hope it would improve but this morning I have just completed two 5min runs before it started again. I feel like I have completely regressed back to week 3 of the program - but with much more pain....

Huge empathy and sympathy for you...I am still on the IC...8th day! Not sure what ails me, mine is a calf issue:)

But..have you done the RICE treatment and used simple exercises to help...maybe a bit of basic advice here for you?

If it is still no better and it sounds not to be.. get it checked out... Today is my decision day to go and see a Physio' and see what is what !

You have not regressed, your body is telling you there is a problem... and if there is, there's a solution :) We come back after injury, steady and slow... :)

I feel your pain. I always stretch my shins after a run (or long walk).

This has really helped (it might take a while to get the real benefit but it does work).

Good luck

I used to get really bad shin splints, even walking hurt so I changed my trainers! It made a world of difference, I had some reeboks and then changed to asics and the extra cushioning really helped with absorbing the shock!

There are also some exercises you can get from google to strengthen the area which really help.

Same here. I had really bad shin splints and then went to a running shop and had gait analysis done and bought some quality running shoes. I think between the trainers, proper socks and my body getting used to running the shin splints went away... lots of other aches and pains but no shin splints 🙂
